Hmm…first Pete Abraham (Bruce Springsteen’s #1 groupie) writes…
UPDATE, 1:12 p.m.: They’re stopping the game to present Alex with the ball for getting a hit with a runner in scoring position. It’s a very touching cermony. Mayor Bloomberg gave him a key to the city, Challenger the Eagle is soaring across the field and the Harlem Boys Choir is singing.
Very sarcastic, right? Then later, (emphasis in bold are mine)
Booing today is unfair, he had an RBI single in the first inning. (Never mind the comment Pete made upon that hit…)
A-Rod is 24 of 100 this month with 30 Ks and 11 GIDPs. He said he felt great at the plate today and didn’t have much to show for it beyond the RBI single in the first inning. It’s silly, I think, for people to boo him like they are. (my note: what did you just do?) He’s at .305/.393/.575 for the season and that’s with playing much of the spring with a bad quad.
Oh, and he was the MVP last season.
What’s it gonna be? Criticize him or not?
I do find what Pete says in this post a little revealing, even though I think he is a bit tough on Girardi (still kissing Torre’s ass? How Long is THAT going to continue?). I have no love for media types, put it that way. But his take on Cano is great. The Yanks really screwed up by giving Cano a $30 million, 4 year deal. For one, they didn’t have to. Cano wasn’t a free agent, he wasn’t going anywhere. They panicked after Cano won arbitration and were scared of what he might get if he continued to have numbers like those put up in 2006 and 2007. But he has regressed this year to the point that I would NOT be adverse to dealing Cano this offseason if you could find a taker.
But given the contract given him (making it difficult to trade him), no adequate replacement in the minors as of yet and the off year (you’d be selling low), that won’t happen.

i have no problem with his sarcastic rips on girardi–he hasn’t shown any ability to lead this team

Girardi has disappointed me, but not to the same extent as I think he has disappointed you, Mike. But then, I remember Dallas Green (whom I despise), Bucky, Ralph Houk (I didn’t care for the “Major” in the 1970s at all). I’ve met Stump. Nice guy. Bad manager.
