Pinstripe Prospects: The Minor League Report.

As you read this post, check out some of the names, and remember that these guys were NOT included in the Nady/Marte deal.

Pete Abraham reports:

* Phil Hughes will throw two innings in the GCL on Monday. He will soon be activated off the DL and optioned. Cashman would not predict whether Hughes would return to the majors. Cash said that teams are clamoring for Hughes in trade talks but he will not deal him.

* Carl Pavano is scheduled to start a GCL game on Tuesday. Assuming he is not attacked by bees first or gets a sunburn.

Regarding Pavano…. to quote Motley Crue, Don’t go Away Mad….Just go away.

GET THIS: With the shutout win last night, the Yanks OPS+ is 103. The ERA+? 104. When is the last time the ERA+ was HIGHER than the OPS+?

AAA: SWB won 7-3. Jeff Karstens gave up 3 R in 5 2/3. (6-4, 3.80). Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless inning, and as I wrote in my post on the trade, doesn’t need to be rushed back now that Marte is acquired. To me, it appears that when he is ready that he would replace Giese, since I suspect Marte will take Hawkins’ spot. Whatever they do, don’t ship Robertson down. The kid has been super. “Great” Britton pitched two scoreless innings. Next deal? Include Britton. The poor guy (2.05) is never going to get a chance here, let’s face it. Not with who they have and who is coming. 2 hits and an RBI for Alberto Gonzalez (HR) and Juan Miranda. Chris Stewart 3 hits and an RBI, HR for Matt Carson.

AA: I will be going down to Trenton tonight (Saturday) to catch Trenton play Portland, Boston’s AA team. I think Kontos was scheduled to start, so I have no idea who will start for Trenton today. As for Kontos and Phil Coke, here is what is on the Trenton blog, manager Tony Franklin’s comments about them:

I can tell you this about the both of them. They both have quality and major league stuff. They don’t need to throw any harder. Their fastballs don’t need to have more velocity. Their breaking balls don’t need to be more refined. What they need to do like most young pitchers need to do is be more consistent and have more command of their ability to throw strikes, command their pitches and command both sides of the plate. That’s it. They’ve got the goods. It’s there. There’s no question about it.

Still, I love the deal. Besides Austin Jackson, I’m hoping to catch Melancon or Claggett today, weather permitting. Rain is in the forecast. It doesn’t look good that I’ll catch Claggett though. Trenton lost 2-1. Coke started the game, struck out the side in the first with a walk, then was pulled as the deal went through. Claggett wound up pitching the last three innings of relief (hence my skepticism about watching him today), giving up one run (unearned) on one hit, two walks and 3 K. He took the loss. (2-1, 1.02). Kevin Whelan gave up a run in 2 IP. (3.60). Trenton only managed three hits. I have a good feeling I get to see Melancon today.

A+: Ah, yes. With the trade and the emphasis on SWB and Trenton, the lower levels. Tampa was postponed. Power problem.

A: An 8-1 win for Charleston. A good outing for Dellin Betances, 7 IP, 1 R, 4 hits, 1 walk and 7 K. Great stuff, needs command. 2 RBI apiece for Brandon Laird and Austin Krum. In what seems to be a daily Montero report…he had 2 hits and an RBI.

GCL: In a rehab stint, Christian Garcia gave up 4 R in 2 2/3.
