If Clara were alive, she’d be asking “Where’s the bats?”
Recap: Joba k’d 6 in 4 IP, but was off and threw a ton of pitches. Hence only 4 IP. Still, just 2 R. Giese, Robertson and Veras kept it at 2, but the Yanks offense was lousy again. Mo came in for the 9th. He’s been perfect at the saves, but imperfect when coming into a tie game and trying to preserve the tie. Sure enough, he gave it up. Go figure.
Derek gets a night off. Off course, Girardi probably had to bind and gag him in order to do so…
Pete Abraham has an excellent piece on Melky Cabrera.
YANKEES (44-39; 3rd, 6 1/2 GB; DEAD EVEN WITH PYTHAGOREAN)
OPS+ 106; ERA+ 96
Damon DH .315-6-35-13-128
Gardner LF 0 for 3, 1 SB. 2nd MLB game.
Abreu RF .283-10-53-11-116
Rodriguez 3B .322-16-44-11-167
Giambi 1B .263-17-46-2-152
Posada C .286-3-20-0-121 (6 for last 34)
Cano 2B .242-6-33-1-71
Betemit SS .266-4-12-0-104 (79 AB; 1 walk, 23 K)
Cabrera CF .244-7-32-6-78 (see Pete’s article. If Melky isn’t looking over his shoulder at Gardner, he better be.)
Chamberlain RHP (2-2, 2.03; ERA+ 198)
Feel free to comment. The weather is nice, but I’m a little under it. I’ll be listening. I’ll check in sometime. I need some rest. There is a Yankee Fan Club meeting tonight, but I’m skipping it to recover.
Until I check in….some trivia. A-Rod comes into tonight with 534 HR, tied with Jimmie Foxx. Next up? Mickey Mantle at 536. Who surrendered Mantle’s 535th, which let him pass Foxx? Be honest now, no cheating.
Damon doubled in the 1st, and Gardner did his job, bunting him to 3rd. Abreu and Alex strand him. Sheesh.
Joba has control trouble and gives up 2 in the 2nd. In the third, the Yanks get the ‘pen up (Giese) as Joba is at 60 pitches already. Looks like an off-night for Joba.
After 3, still 2-0 Rangers. Damon has doubled twice, and both times is left stranded.
Yanks got a run on a Cano single, but despite K’ing 6, Joba only lasted 4 innings, throwing over 90 pitches and giving up two runs. Giese went a scoreless 5th, and David Robertson had a good sixth, striking out two. Yanks still down 2-1 after 5 1/2.
Three straight hits (Posada, Cano and Betemit) tie it in the 6th.
Robertson has a scoreless 7th. Veras up. Gardner went 3-0, but then grounded out on a full count. I was hoping he’d get on and go. Abreu gets on with two out but Alex flies out.
Tampa is beating Boston. If you don’t think the Rays are for real, guess what. They have the best record in baseball.
Scoreless 8th for Veras. Yanks can’t score. Mo in. Gives up a leadoff double. Funny. He has two losses. Both in this kind of situation. He saves….but hasn’t held if a tie.
SB, single. 3-2.
…and Yanks go down in the 9th. Lose 3-2.
Minor league report tomorrow morning. I want to get some rest so I feel better tomorrow.

I like the top of the lineup today. alot of speed at the top four with Damon, Gardner, Abreu, and A-Rod. hopefully they can work they way on base and cause some havoc

Joba K’s Bradley to end the inning
Now wake up offence

Damon doubles. I’d like to see Gardner drag a bunt here.

Damon doubles to lead off

2 lead off walks for Joba
9 Nick.K // Jul 1, 2008 at 8:21 pm
that is TWO Damon doubles wasted. Too bad he can’t bat and stand on second simultaneously

Answer: Denny McLain. (and there’s a story behind that, which I won’t get into here)…

when Matsui comes back melky has to go to the bench

Big-time outing from Robertson–2IP, no hits, scoreless, 2 BBs, 3 Ks. That will earn extra looks.

Top of the order. Nice job by Betemit as well for the game-tying single in the bottom of the sixth.

Love how Sterling says “He’s come out of nowhere” for Robertson. Start reading my blog, John. I’ve been talking about him all year :-)

If Robertson can come in and maintain an ERA at or under 3, he’ll earn clutch time. It’s Mariano, Veras, and Nuke, with Edwar up and down lately. I like how Girardi is using Giese, but there’s time available for others as well, and Robertson should get plenty of time. He’s earning it.
Gardner is now apparently impressing Sterling and Waldman with crisp throws in from the outfield. Melky is playing his way onto the bench, even though Gardner is due for his first hit. It’s time for people to play or sit, to s%*t or get off the pot for someone else.

Decent from Veras, not enough strikes but effective.

Rays beat Boston 3-1.

Francisco has been dominant.
Mariano is in for the 9th.
19 Jason // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Kinsler with the lead-off double, shoot.
20 Mike Sommer // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Mo’s only chink this year. For some reason, if he comes in with the tie, he’s coughed up the lead.
21 Mike Sommer // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Even though Gardner hasn’t got a hit yet, he is going deep into counts.
22 Nick.K // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:31 pm
DAMN it Melky
23 Nick.K // Jul 1, 2008 at 10:32 pm
That was so pathetic

whom are these guys wearing our uniforms?
is this another remake of the body snatchers?
again - happy i didnt go tonight.
i fear to think what will happen against the sox- of course there are good precedents for us being bad and then smashing the sox- but lets face it- this team isn’t going anywhere
