Game 67. Yanks 4, A’s 1. How to celebrate a birthday? With a Godzilla Granny and 8 strong innings from Pettitte.

June 12th, 2008 at 7:48 pm · 31 Comments

Birthday
Matsui celebrated his birthday (34) with a Grand Slam.
Pettitte (36 on Sunday) celebrates with a win.

Recap: Matsui celebrated his 34th birthday with a grand slam. Andy Pettitte turns 36 on Sunday. He went 8 innings, giving up just one run. Party hardy, birthday boys. 4-1 Yanks. Nice comeback for Andy after his lousy performance last time. Oh, yeah…speaking of comebacks….

YANKEES
(OPS+ 108; ERA+ 93. 1 game better than Pythagorean);
T 3rd (or tied for last, depending on how you look at it) 7 GB

BA/HR/RBI/OPS+
Damon LF .321-6-31-11-141 (3rd in BA)
Jeter SS .272-3-27-4-92 (still subpar)
Abreu RF .298-8-42-5-127
Rodriguez 3B .314-10-32-6-159 (anything 120 or over is very good; 4th in SA if he qualified)
Matsui DH .323-6-29-0-135 (4th in BA; 5th OBP)
Giambi 1B .263-15-37-1-163 (3rd in SA; 2nd OPS; check the BA…getting respectable)
Cano 2B .224-4-20-1-60 (Atrocious)
Cabrera CF .266-7-28-3-93 (compare with Jeter)
Molina C .217-0-6-0-49 (terrible because of 3 walks in 120 AB)
Pettitte LHP (5-5, 4.99; ERA+ 83)

Soriano and Pujols join Smoltz, Bonderman on the DL list….Some big names on that list….

Wonder if Milton Bradley will go after John and Suzyn? Naaaahhh….

Celts-Lakers Game 4 tonight.

As a PSU grad, I was surprised to see that Mitch Frerotte, ex-PSU football player and former Buffalo Bill, passed on at age 43. He was a member of Penn State’s 1986 national championship team, and played in three Super Bowls.

Note from Pete Abraham:

Remember Jonathan Albaladejo? Turns out he has a stress fracture in his elbow in addition to his other issues. He’s done for the season.

1st. JD singles. Go, Johnny, Go. Johnny B. Goode. Steal. Sterling gives DJ’s stats…no comment on them, of course. Groundout. Damon to 2nd. Abreu flies out. Suzyn and John discussing the nice getaway “day.” What a joke. Arrive 6 a.m. in Houston. Only the Yankees. A-Rod walks. Matsui grounds out.
Flyout. Andy turns 36 Sunday. Single. Deep flyout. Foul Popup to catcher. Good start for Andy.

2nd. Giambi grounds out. Cano flies out. Sterling “he sure doesn’t look like the same hitter we’ve seen the last three years.” No kidding, John. But I guess that’s as close to criticism as we’ll get. Melky makes it a 1-2-3 inning.
Leadoff double. sac. single and RBI. K. Forceout. A’s 1-0 after 2.

3rd. Sterling is more cirtical tonight. Finally. Talks about the inconsistency and that “names” aren’t hitting like their names. Gee, what got into him? Another 1-2-3 inning for the offense.
Flyout. GO. Walk. GO. 1-0 A’s after 3.

4th. Abreu makes out. A-Rod singles. Matsui whiffs. Giambi singles Alex to 3rd. Wake up Cano. Pathetic. Bloop to short. Damn. Cano needs a foot where the sun don’t shine. Offense only had 3 runs Tues., 1 run until the 9th yesterday. Nothing today.
Leadoff single. DP. Groundout. A’s 1-0 after 4.

5th.1-2-3. Pathetic. Yanks show no signs of getting to Blanton. None.
Leadoff single. E3. Sac. Good point by McCarron. Yanks OPS w/RISP is 27th in the majors. K. Big K for the 2nd out. Now McCarron talks about last year’s offense which almost scored 1000 runs. Last year is LAST YEAR. No one gets younger. People get older. No change, but just another year older. Oh, please McCarron. He says Yanks could use Proctor? Get away, McCarron. Please. Damon catches it at the wall. Whew. Anyway, before I’d want to see Proctor, I’d rather see others…like minor leaguers (Robertson) that McCarron of course never mentioned. Proctor is 1-0, 5.27 by the way. Way to do your homework, McCarron.

6th. Jeter singles. Abreu walks. Yanks must score here, esp. after A’s didn’t last inning. Alex walks. Godzilla Granny! and on his b/day, too (#34). 1-2-3 then. 4-1 Yanks.
Scoreless for Andy. A good outing from him. Much needed, esp. after the disaster the last start was.

UNBELIEVABLE. Celtics down 21 after 1Q, 17 at half come back and beat LA. Take 3-1 Series lead. Talk about tearing the heart out of a team. The other day it was Powe with 21. Now it’s Posey 18 and House 11…the Big 3 get help.

7th. Molina singles. Forced by JD. JD forced by DJ. Pitching change. Flyout by Abreu.
K. Flyout. Andy dealing well tonight. Getting out of that inning was huge. A 1-2-3 here. Anyway, down 1-0, 2nd and 3rd, Pettitte got out of the inning. The very next inning, grand slam. A big turnaround there. If Andy gives up a hit, (and the last out was caught at the wall) it’s 3-0 A’s, and who knows what happens. One thing…two of the runners on base when Matsui homered got there by drawing walks.

8th. 1-2-3 for Yanks.
Andy still out there. 1-2-3.

9th. Nothing for Yanks here.
Andy coming out. In comes Mo. Walk. Flyout. K. K.
Yankees win.

    Hey Mike!
You are here by your lonesome tonight. Did you see my boy Dammit got his 4th HR in 3 games. The Bucs seem to have named him the starter, so maybe the window is closed there. Incredibly, we are close to .500 again.

  • 4 Jeff // Jun 12, 2008 at 11:08 pm

2 points after 3 woo hoo

  • 5 Mike Sommer // Jun 12, 2008 at 11:09 pm

Be nice for the Buccos to get over .500. A sub-.500 season, I think, ties the Phils for most consecutive under .500.

End of 3…ready for this? Lakers 73, Celtics 71! Could they pull off what would be one of the greatest comebacks ever? Not only that…they are doing it without Rondo or Perkins on the floor right now.

the conundrum is the losing streak (very real to Pittsburgh fans) is to be avoided and yet we know the outfield (but for McClouth) is to be traded for the future. it is a very uncomfortable place as a fan.

tied at 75 woo hoo that’s nasty
