Representing the letter G…Giese and Giambi.
Recap: Yanks win 6-3 behind the “G’s”, Giese and Giambi. Giese gets his 1st MLB win with 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Joba, who was so-so, but better than last time. Joba went 4 1/3, K’d 5, and gave up 3 R, 2 ER. The hot-as-the-96 degree-weather Giambi hit his 14th HR (378th career) to give the Yanks the lead. Abreu had three RBI and Alex two. The .500 dance continues as the Yanks go one over. In 6 1/3 IP since his callup, Giese has given up just one run.
YANKEES (31-31, tied for 4th in AL East [that’s a nice way of putting it…] 1/2 game out of 3rd, 6.5 GB of 1st.)
OPS+ 109; ERA+ 92. One game better than Pythagorean.
Damon DH .326-6-31-10-144
Jeter SS .280-3-27-JUST 4-JUST 96 (35 points below lifetime BA)
Abreu RF .286-7-39-JUST 5-118
Rodriguez 3B .304-9 (527 career)-27-6-153
Matsui LF .332-6-29-ZERO-140
Giambi 1B .259-13-33-1-157 (leads team in HR, walks, now 2nd in RBI. Up to .259 from the .150 range…)
Posada C .310-2-13-0-136 (22 for 71)
Cano 2B .230-4-20-1-67 (well, at least it’s .230 now. Tough Love still continues…)
Cabrera CF .279-6-27-JUST THREE-99
Chamberlain RHP 1-2, 2.42, ERA+ 170
3rd time in 63 games you have these 9 in the starting lineup. Joba will be at 75-80 pitches….Going into yesterday the Yanks were last in the league in IP from starters…just under 5 2/3….Yanks hoping to get Bruney back around the All-Star break. What a pleasant surprise that would be. Fears were that he’d be lost for the year. More Bruney, less Farnsworth(less)?…Damon’s six hits yesterday tied a Yankee record set by Myril Hoag and Gerald Williams. Gerald’s was in a 15-inning game…. Celts-Lakers Game 2 tonight.
4 innings down. KC 3-2. Abreu hit a two-run HR in the 1st, Posada was robbed of a two-run double. Joba gave up an unearned run in the 2nd when Posada’s PB let in a run. In the 3rd, Joba gave up a leadoff double, and was one strike away from escaping the inning with no runs allowed when he gave up a 2-run HR to Jose Guillen.
Joba back for the 5th. K, walk, and he’s out. Giese in. Popup. Error Giese on a pickoff. Big G flashes leather and saves a run.
Joba’s line: 4 1/3 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 1 walk, 5 K. Not a great job, but better than last time. Decent enough.
5th. Damon leadoff triple. They must get him in here. Jeter whiffs (yup, Jeter should NEVER bunt…Cough, cough. Squeeze, cough cough.) Abreu picks up DJ with an RBI groundout. Tie game. Walk to Alex. Gathright’s speed robs Godzilla.
6th. Two bases on a K that gets past the catcher? Ugh. But Giese gets out of it. I only mentioned, what, two weeks ago that they should bring the guy up?
The Big G is as hot as the weather. His 14th HR of the year and 378th of his career gives the Yanks the lead. Passes Norm Cash, ties Matt Williams on the all-time list. Next up, Cepeda and Tony Perez at 379. Walk to Posada, pitching change. GIDP for Cano. Griffey still has 599, Chipper Jones just got his 400th recently (401 now). Manny tied Eddie Murray at 504. Soon Frank Thomas (520) and Jim Thome (519) will catch Ted Williams and Willie McCovey (521 each). End of inning. 4-3 Yanks.
7th. Giese 2 2/3 scoreless today. Total since up? 6 1/3, 1 R. Good job.
Yanks get insurance. Hot JD singles, after an out by Jeter, Abreu singles. A-Rod doubles in two and is thrown out going for 3. Godzilla walks. No more runs. But insurance, as Yanks now lead 6-3.
8th. Veras in. Giese 2 2/3, 0 R, 0 Hits, 0 walks…only runner the two bases on the K. Good job. Veras K’s the side.
Nothing for Yanks.
9th. Mo. Forget yesterday. Mo is back to being Mo. 1-2-3. Yanks win.

5 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Mike have the yanks said how many pitches Joba will throw. When they anounced last time he would throw 65 pitches I knew they should not have
6 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:07 pm
well i think he might be able to throw up to 80, but like the blue jays, the royals will be able to figure that out as well.
7 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:10 pm
I can’t believe we are only 6 and a half games back on first.
8 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:11 pm
yeah, it could be a lot worse. cheap hit for grudzelanek
9 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:12 pm

22 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:26 pm
no, we can make trades all season as far as i know
23 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I picked up Delmon Young for my bench. Bonderman was put on the DL
24 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:29 pm
yeah i saw that. i always hated that pig since he beat us in 06
25 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:29 pm
if i were grienke i would try to strike him out with a curve
26 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:30 pm

27 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:31 pm
dammit, i thought that jorge had that one out of there
28 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:37 pm
i dropped gordon from my team- he was doing nothing for me
29 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Have you noticed Mike when you drop a player we does well
30 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:39 pm
yes- unfortunately.

K’ED HIM
2 gone. That was big
34 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:42 pm
ahh jorge…why didja have to let that pass?
35 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:43 pm
hey nick- a question-
i noticed that one of the managers of a team in our league- the felins- has the name Nick K. do you know who that is?
36 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:44 pm
GOT HIM!
37 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:46 pm
I noticed that the other day sorry I don’t know who that is. I looked at the fantasy league and saw that I picked up Kyle Davies. I was saying to myself on I didn’t but it was not me.
38 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:48 pm
i can’t BELIEVE gathright got that ball off of cano- damn.
yeah that’s when i noticed the name too nick- i thought maybe you had two teams :)
39 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Nice catch.
Dang it.
40 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:50 pm
yeah that would mean I was 9th and 10th lol
41 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:50 pm
that wasn’t a good inning…at least cano gave it a ride
42 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:51 pm
so that was a pretty interesting article on those clubhouse guys, wasn’t it?
43 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:51 pm
what is your opinion Mike on the joel sherman story above in the blog.
44 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:52 pm
yeah it was a great read.
45 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:55 pm
you know i like the idea of garret atkins playing 1st base for us- but i still prefer mark teixera who is younger, better and a switch hitter
46 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:59 pm
i hate that jose guillen - a loudmouthed steroid user
47 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:01 pm
now i really hate him
48 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:02 pm
why didn;t he just blow a fastball by him? jeeeez
49 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Yankees continue to bring the best out in crappy teams. Too bad the Royals can’t raise their game against any other opponent.
50 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:08 pm
thye problem is our pitchers are either too young or too old. we’ll have an awesome bunch of pitchers in 2010- maybe next year
51 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:09 pm
i can’t believe that greinke caught that ball
52 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:11 pm
greinke’s getting hit and getting lucky
53 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Mike if you had to predict the 09 rotation what would it be.
Wang, Joba, Hughes, Kennedy and Cy Ras. or something
54 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:14 pm
my best guess would be
wang joba sabathia hughes and either rasner or IPK
55 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:15 pm
now greinke is in a groove- he can be pretty tough.
56 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:19 pm
BIG G makes a catch!
57 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:20 pm
nice 123
58 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:22 pm
66 pitches through four
59 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Hi guys. The Yanks have plastered the ball but are down a run. I can’t stand that jackass Guillen either, Mike. What a jerk. At least Joba has been more efficient than his previous start. He’s really made only one bad mistake–to the aforementioned Guillen.
60 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:23 pm
hey jason! and did you see how that guillen called out his teammmates last week?
61 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:27 pm
He’s a winner, Mike–the same guy who got traded away from the Angels for being a poor teammate. Pot and kettle, to me.
62 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:27 pm
cheap hit, but i’ll take it
63 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:28 pm
thanks melky for working the count
64 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Got to hand it to Cano, he’s eking out hits–even some cheap ones. That atones for the robbery from his first at-bat.
65 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:29 pm
More impatience from Melky. Terrible.
66 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:30 pm
so joba is back out. good
67 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:31 pm
i see the joba rules are somewhat fluid
68 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Joba is apparently going to go 75-80 pitches.
69 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Joba fans Gathright looking, nice.
70 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:33 pm
be nice to see him get through the 5th. maybe we can even get him a a W
71 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:33 pm
I’m spoiling myself with lunch–an inch-thick venison steak rare, and a Sprecher Russian Imperial Stout–way good.
72 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Indeed, Mike. Joba has thrown a ton of strikes.
73 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:34 pm
so maybe he shouldn’t keep shaking off jorge
74 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:35 pm
that’s very wintry ( but delicious) sounding lunch
75 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:35 pm
it’s hot as hell here . like 93
76 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Frank the Sage brought some venison steaks to the Outer Banks, but forgot them in the fridge. Thankfully they were frozen most of the week and could easily survive the trip home. I’ve had a couple each week–delicious, very lean, full of protein.
77 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Same here, Mike, about 91 right now.
78 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:37 pm
3-2 curve? whats wrong with a fastball? same as with guillen .
79 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Joba should be done here–he’s at 78 pitches.
80 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Too bad, lost him from 1-2. Good job, kid. Just one real mistake. Good hand from the fans.
81 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Very good article from Price you sent, Mike. Thanks for forwarding it.
82 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:41 pm
that was a lot of fun , wasn’t it? i love knowing what goes on behind the scenes. wouldn’t you love to be able to wander around yankee stadium all by yourself with a key to every room and office?
83 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:44 pm
big G flashes leather
84 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Giambi for Gold Glove
86 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I would, Mike. That and to chin-wag with the players.
87 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:47 pm
ok 3rd time through the order- lets get him
88 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:49 pm
i wish melky would learn to work the count like damon
89 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:49 pm
hell yeah!
90 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Leadoff triple.
91 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:50 pm
hey mike!
92 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:51 pm
JD for President! That guy is unbelievable right now. What a great at-bat–10 pitches. Greinke must have his tongue hanging out right now.
93 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Hey Mike. Nice A-Rod call yesterday, as I blogged yesterday.
94 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:52 pm
ho-hum
95 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Abreu ties the game and picks up Jeter with the hard-hit 4-3, nice team baseball.
96 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm
i can’t believe that gathright today. he’s taken away 4 hits
97 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Yup. Surprised at Belmont? After all, we already knew what a Brown could do for us…
98 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Gathright is stealing runs from the Yanks. That’s twice on Posada.
99 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Gathright is annoying
100 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I was almost laughing considering how Big Brown’s trainer treated a win as a foregone conclusion, then had no answers for why his horse petered out. The jockey–who would no best in the race–said he had no horse coming around the back turn, and you could tell. He was coaxing hard, but the horses stayed in a staggered formation for a good half-mile. Big Brown couldn’t give any more, for whatever reason. A little humility serves everyone well.
101 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:00 pm
i just wish i’d made a bet on that 38-1 horse
102 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:00 pm
very annoying. i wish he was out of this game
103 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Yeah, I would have liked the Triple Crown, but the trainer shooting his mouth off made the fact the horse finished last a little sweet.
Interesting that the horse had his last steroids shot on April 15th. Maybe that was why the horse had no “juice”? Could that explain the goodness and not-so-goodness of the horse’s races? Who knows?
104 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:03 pm
That’s what I said, Mike. A $20 bet would have brought back $760. Nice K, Giese. The kid impresses me. He’s not overwhelming, but he’s around the strike zone. A bit like Rasner. What’s not to like?
105 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:04 pm
You gotta be kidding. 2 bases on a K. Boo.
106 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:05 pm
as joe torre would say, i’m very comfortable watching him.
slow jorge
107 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:05 pm
How the hell does Olivo take second on a K?!? That’s disgraceful, absolutely disgraceful, all the worse with Yankee-killer Gload coming up. If he scores, I’m sicking Tim the Wizard on the Yanks.
108 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Gets out of it. Nice job, Giese. And I said to bring up up when….?
109 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:06 pm
A-Rod spared the Yanks a late-night visit from Tim. They don’t know how lucky they are.
110 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:06 pm
HA!
111 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Mike, I think you were clearly a bandwagon jumper on Giese. If only you actually followed the minors on a regular basis, like Sterling and Waldman. :-)>
112 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Tim is listening to “Those Wedding Bells are Breaking up that Old Gang of Mine….”
113 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:08 pm
ROFL, Jason.
114 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:08 pm
i’m tired of giambi starting the inning. he does better when guys are on base
115 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:10 pm
maybe it’s OK to start the inning!
116 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Goodness, is the Big G as hot as the weather. #378.
117 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Add Giambi to JD’s presidential ticket! Holy Mash, Batman!
118 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:11 pm
LOL, Mikes.
119 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Contract year. He’s looking for a deal somewhere in 2009.
120 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:13 pm
I think I saw Gathright running through the aisles after that, but he slipped on a soda.
121 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Jorge draws the BB. That should end it for Greinke.
122 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:14 pm
i have heard it postulated that they might buy out Big G for the 5 mill they owe him and then re-sign him for a cheaper one year deal
123 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:15 pm
jason you’re on today
124 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I can’t stand the Yanks getting robbed, but I LOVE great defense, especially from the outfielders.
125 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:18 pm
i absolutely agree jason. i love watching great defense. it’s the only sport to me where it is entertaining
126 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:19 pm
nice at bat from cano-
127 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:19 pm
why did i say that?
128 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Cano grounds into the DP, two down. When, oh when, is this kid going to snap out of it?
129 Nick.K // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Cano parlays a walk into 2 outs
130 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:21 pm
next spring training jason- look out for crooked numbers from the kid
131 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:22 pm
At least the Yanks grabbed the lead. Plus, while I want to see them manufacture runs, I can’t say that I mind in the slightest that they’re hitting some homers again.
132 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:24 pm
LOL, Mike.
133 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Thank goodness for death Valley–which has seen a lot of activity lately, oddly enough. Melky tracks it down, one out.
134 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:25 pm
let this kid pitch the 8th
135 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Love how Waldman corrected Sterling after Sterling said that Giese pitched a good inning or two vs. Toronto last time out.
It was 3 2/3, John.
136 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:26 pm
that was a generous call
137 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:27 pm
If he retires DeJesus, Mike, he might. After all, Mike–no Nuke is good Nuke.
138 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:28 pm
ohhh that was close…
139 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:29 pm
You know what kills me, Mike? I love Sterling’s anecdotes, voice, and passion. But the guy readily admits to throwing out his score sheets after the game. He’s in a direct position to be a historian of sorts for the game and this great franchise, and he might as well line the bird cage with crucial information that he can use later. Be a historian!
I don’t get it.
140 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:29 pm
2 2/3 today. He’s done well.
141 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:29 pm
justin masterson is pitching for the sox- has only given up a run in 6 innings. i have to say, theo and company know how to draft good players
142 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm
settle down jas…it’s too hot today to get all worked up
143 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Boy, did Giese clam the door shut. Plus, 3 K’s! K’s on curves and fastballs. Excellent stint for the kid. Keep him, regardless of what that Mike Sommer says!
144 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:31 pm
I’m in the a/c, Mike. I’m cool as a cuke.
145 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:31 pm
The guy BRAGS that he’s not a stats guy. He doesn’t have to brag. It shows.
146 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Slam the door shut, that is. But he might as well have clammed it. After 2 2/3 shutout, perfect innings, he can do whatever he feels like with the figurative door.
147 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:33 pm
you guys are killing me…
148 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I have more paperwork to go through tonight. I spent 2 1/2 hours last night reading and signing forms. The forms are literally an inch thick that I have to sign and send back. Amazing.
149 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:33 pm
JD’s average continues to climb–up 79 points in less than 3 weeks.
150 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:34 pm
i’d like to take this moment to mention how much i like the royals uniforms today
151 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:34 pm
You’re exactly right about the Red Sox and their stockpile of arms, Mike. They’ve got ‘em.
152 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:36 pm
It sounds like they want everything from your blood type to your reading preferences, Mike. I’d just leave a cover sheet with the URL to The Sommer Frieze and tell them you’ll get back to them.
153 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Looks like Veras in 8th. Hmmm
154 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:37 pm
that sounds like a plan jason
155 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:38 pm
They kind of want the blood type…not really, but I do have to take a drug test tomorrow.
156 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:39 pm
nice piece of hitting from bobby
157 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:39 pm
That’s interesting, especially instead of Nuke but also Giese. If they keep Giese up and want to save him, it’s not so bad. But I’m in favor of letting Giese go batter-to-batter. Keep what works.
According to Waldman, maybe they just don’t want to use Nuke, who pitched Thursday. Thanks for the platitude, Suzyn. Nuke’s not warming up was a good sign of that, no?
158 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Just a SF, A-Rod. If it goes 450 ft, we’ll take it. Just get it in the air and 300 feet or so.
159 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:40 pm
BA with the single, first and third. A-Rod, drive the ball.
160 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:42 pm
We’ll take one off the wall. That works. 2 -run double, thrown out going for 3.
161 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:42 pm
ahh too bad a-rod didn’t make it to 3rd… he thought it was out
162 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:43 pm
i have to agree with michael kay on that
163 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Yes, A-Rod! Out and third, but scores 2 HUGE insurance runs on a missile, 6-3.
164 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:43 pm
I’m not able to see it, but need to ask….was Alex running HARD out of the box? Did he think it was gone…Just wondering if not going hard out of the box was the difference between the double and the triple?
As I said, I didn’t see it, but…
165 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Great to have A-Rod back, and nice hitting with RISP for a change. That’s huge for this team A-Rod’s RISP and others as well. This team gets base runners in myriad ways. They need to score them. Huge hit.
166 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I don’t think he ran as hard as he could to first, Mike.
167 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:45 pm
he was trotting slower than big brown mike
168 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:48 pm
LOL, Mike F..
169 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:49 pm
that damn phil cuzzi
170 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:52 pm
that damn phil cuzzi
I prefer Jack Cuzzi.
171 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:53 pm
i was sorry to see chipper has a quad strain- i hope it’s not a serious one
172 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:53 pm
who the F would text into YES that Guillen was player of the game? ridiculous.
173 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Mike S., I watched Game 7 of the 1963 NBA Finals, a great game, last night. Not a heck of a lot of great defense, though Heinson and Havlicek impressed with some steals. Sanders and Jones hit key shots, and Russell was utterly imposing on both ends. I’ve not seen that many crew cuts since the Memorial Day parade.
174 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Game 7 of 1963 Finals….Cousy’s last game as a celtic.
Note I didn’t say last game. He came back as a player-coach in 1969 for the Cincy Royals. Bad move. Should have let it be.
175 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Great job Veras. 3 run lead? Leave him in. Save Mo.
176 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:00 pm
i watched a rare episode of captain kangaroo from 1962 last night. it was the last appearance of bunny rabbit
177 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:03 pm
great comparison of damon over cano
178 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Exactly on Cousy’s last Celtics game. He was big.
Nice job, Veras.
179 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Jorge with the lead-off BB.
180 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:05 pm
that damn cano. worthless
181 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Oh, that bunny rabbit Mike. He was a freak.
182 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:06 pm
and melky just as bad today
183 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:06 pm
NIIIICE, Cano, one pitch to erase the lead runner. Great patience.
184 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:06 pm
he was a bit of a sadist for a children’s show, but he had great charisma.
185 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:07 pm
oh sorry, that was betemit
186 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Would love to see Joba hit one into that short LF porch in Houston this coming Friday night.
187 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:08 pm
that should be a fun game mike
188 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Trivia. Not much time to answer it….
Last Yankee pitcher to hit a HR? No cheating.
189 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:10 pm
i have no idea, but i’ll try to make a guess. whitey ford?
190 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:11 pm
JD grounds out. Only 2-5 today, upping his average only .002?!? I think the Yanks need to DFA him immediately.
191 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:12 pm
later than Whitey.
Enter Sandman.
192 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:13 pm
he’s on the bus to scranton jason- an embarrassment today
193 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:13 pm
This pitcher was a reliever and hit it off of Mickey Lolich in 1973
194 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Marianio, one pitch one out.
Sorry, I was gone while switching long distance carriers to one that doesn’t spy on me and lie to the public about it.
195 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I’d say Sparky Lyle, but I’m only guessing Mike.
196 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:15 pm
thuuuuuughhhhh,……..
197 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:15 pm
who did you drop and who did you change to jason?
198 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Mariano proves what a mistake that one pitch was and dusts the Royals 1-2-3 on a mere 7 pitches.
199 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:16 pm
From AT&T to Working Assets.
200 Mike Sommer // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:16 pm
….and that’s the ballgame. Over .500.
1st MLB win for Giese.
Answer (Mo doesn’t give you much time):
Lindy McDaniel.
BTW, the 1st HR in the Astrodome was in an exhibition game vs. the Yanks in 1965. The very first indoor HR was hit by….Mickey Mantle.
201 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:17 pm
working assets? i’ll look into that.
202 mike f // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:21 pm
thanks for hosting mike-good easy win today
203 Jason // Jun 8, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Thanks for hosting, Mike. I’m going to cut the grass before another couple inches of rain falls, then write the wrap with a cold one. Good win, and good series win. Onward and upward–hopefully.
