Recap: PH Jason Giambi’s 2-run walkoff HR in the 9th capped a 3-run rally as the Yanks surprisingly came from behind to win 9-8 and go back to .500. Wang was lousy again. His last W occurred on May 2nd. It was the same as what we’ve seen from him in the past month. Melky misplayed a ball that could have been a DP. A big inning ensued. The Yanks failed on a couple of occasions. Twice Alex and Matsui couldn’t come through. Cano hit into a DP at the wrong time. Brad Wilkerson robbed Damon of a potential double that would have given the Yanks the lead. Farnsworth(less) was his usual self, to the chagrin of the crowd, giving up an insurance run in the 8th. The shirts Suzy K wrote about? Anybody but Farnsworth? Should sell like hotcakes…But a surprising come-from-behind win.
YANKEES
Damon DH .310-6-27-8-139
Jeter SS .282-3-27-4-99
Abreu RF .281-7-37-5-119 (1 for last 16)
Rodriguez 3B .293-8-23-6-149
Matsui LF .337-6-28-0-147 (leads AL in BA by 7)
Posada C .302-1-11-0-120 (19 for 63) Welcome back, Jorge!
Cano 2B .217-4-19-1-60 (We’ll say it again, Robbie….start hitting, damn it! Ugh. .217 and 7th)
Betemit 1B .238-2-4-0-84 (10 for 42)
Cabrera CF .265-3-26-3-95
Wang RHP 6-2, 4.14 ERA+ 99
MLB Baseball Draft starts at 2 p.m. today.
1st. Wang has a 1-2-3, 2 Groundouts, and he K’s Rios, who has a 25 g. hitting streak vs. the Yanks.
Walk to Damon, Double by DJ, RBI Groundout by Abreu and a SF by A-Rod give the Yanks a 2-0 lead.
2nd. Cano, not doing it with the bat, does it with the glove for the first out. K for out #2, Groundout. 1-2-3
Standing O for HIP-HIP….and what a ham, Jorge singles. Cano singles (good…heat up already). Betemit GIDP. Melky whiffs.
3rd. Out, walk, single. walk loads the bases. Wang gets a big K, but now has Rios to deal with. Jeter goes into the hole and gets the force at third (momentum carrying him that way). Good play. Wang gets out of it.
ESPN reporting that talks with Cashman for an extension could happen this week. There are some at various blogs who won’t be happy with that.
Damon gets a single and a SB as Jeter K’s. Abreu singles, Damon held at 3rd. A-Rod lines a soft bloop to 2nd. Poor job, Alex. Matsui whiffs. Runners stranded. 2-0 Yanks after 3.
Smoltz to get season-ending surgery. Wonder if he comes back at all, given his age? Meanwhile, 38pitches.com is throwing. Ugh.
4th. Walk. Stairs HR ties the game. He gets the next three.
Jeff Peterson, a blog reader from near Pittsburgh should be interested in the Pirates selection. 3B Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt.
Nothing for Yanks.
5th. Leadoff walk. Wang is walking a lot of people lately. FC. Infield hit. Melky goes clunk. A DP ball clangs off the glove and instead it’s a run.
God I hate Sterling and Waldman when they discuss minor leaguers. They don’t know what they are talking about, and never want to give minor leaguers a chance. Instead they are always so willing to make a trade. I’d love to know who the **** gave them their first chances. 2 run single by Matt Stairs (I can’t stand Stairs) makes it 5-2 Jays and Ohlie is up. 2-run double. 7-2 and it’s so long, Wang. Ohlendorf in. He ends the inning.
Melky singles, Damon walks, Jeter HBP. RBI groundout by Abreu. 7-3. They need A-Rod to hit one here. He gets a cheap SF (popup near the tarp). Jeter to 3rd. 7-4. That’s all they get.
Sadie in.
6th. 1-2-3 for Sadie.
With one out, Cano gets his 2nd hit of the game. Pitching change. Betemit goes deep! 7-6. Damon gets a two-out hit. Another pitching change. Damon CS.
7th. Hawkins gives up a hit and walk, Veras in. 3-6-1 DP. Nice, Veras. I don’t see why Sterling loves Veras so much but won’t give people like a David Robertson or Mark Melancon a chance (or even talk about them). Veras gets a K. Great job by Veras. (But the others deserve chances and to be talked about).
Jeter makes out, but Abreu gets a double. A-Rod grounds out. Matsui strikes out. Just like in the 3rd, Alex and Godzilla don’t get the job done.
8th. Walk, SB, HBP. Veras has lost the strike zone. Sac. Groundout, Jeter comes home, runner caught. 2 down, batter goes to 2nd. 2nd and 3rd, 2 out. Veras gets a flyout and gets out of it.
Jorge does something we have missed. Walked. For his batting average, power, catching ability, people forget that Jorge draws walks—unlike Molina. Cano tries to bunt. Doesn’t. Sterling is surprised Cano is bunting? Granted Cano has 2 hits today, but check Cano’s BA, John. Duncan comes in as a PR. And Cano can’t lay one down. Bunts a couple foul. Sheesh. DP. Damn you Cano. Now you know, Sterling. Now you know. Damn Cano. Sure enough, Betemit singles. A bunt, properly put down, moves Duncan up and the game might be tied right now. Stinkin’ Cano. The inability to be able to bunt, esp. by a 2B, is inexcusable. It’s not like it is Giambi. Melky walks. Robbie Stinkin’ Cano. Should be at SWB except for his stupid, stupid, stupid 4-year contract. WP! Now a single gives the Yanks the lead and it would be Mariano time. C’mon JD. Damon is robbed of a double on a leaping catch by Wilkerson at the wall. Potentially a game-saving catch, as the tying and go-ahead runs would have scored.
9th. Good Lord. Farnsworth(less). Rios singles. Hit streak vs. Yanks is now 26. Rolen singles. Another hit and a run, and the boo-birds are out. Finally an out. Sarcastic cheers. Eventually Melky ends the inning with a running catch that saves Farnsworth(less) 3 runs.
A-Rod gets a one-out hit. Yanks have a shot if Someone can park one. A-Rod goes to second on defensive indifference. Base hit by Matsui makes it 8-7. Damn you Farnsworth(less). Now a HR wins it.
AND THE BIG G DOES IT!!!!! PINCH HIT 2-RUN HR WINS THE GAME 9-8 on an 0-2 count!!!
Yankees win….THE YANKEES WIN!!!!!!!

Is it wrong to be more excited about the draft then this game.
Come on Yankees
2 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:03 pm
i might be more excited about the draft if the yanks had one of the top picks…
3 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:06 pm
can you guy tell me what top pick we get during the game.
4 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:08 pm
yes as soon as i find out i’ll let you know
5 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Nice one.
Great to see Jorge back

8 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I used to call him George before I heard someone say his name.
9 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:12 pm
2 grounders - excellent sign
10 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:13 pm
probably not a lot of guys named jorge in england…
11 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:13 pm
yeah and a very goodlooking K as well
12 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:15 pm
so i have mc gowan on my fantasy team and you have wang…
i hope your guy wins…
13 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:15 pm

we keep switching positions…
15 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Miguel Cabrera and Robby Cano have been killing me, my best 2 players done next to nothing
16 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Hi guys. Nice first from Wang. He’s due for a better start after being poor lately. Great to see Jorge back, the guts of the team, though that shoulder won’t be 100% until off-season surgery.
17 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:18 pm
surprising about miguel isn’t it?
18 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:19 pm
hey jason—i was worried about you guys in the storm. glad everything is OK
19 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:20 pm
jeter with the double
20 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Mench lost the ball in the sky, second and third. All is well, Mike. The storms were very nasty, and there was a tornado about 5 miles from us–nothing too destructive, but it’s still scary especially at night. We had about 5 to 6 inches of rain in just over a day.
21 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:22 pm
A couple ducks here, BA. He’s gone cold and needs to heat up.
22 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:22 pm
at least that was a productive out
23 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Soft 4-3 at least scores a run–at least it’s a productive out.
24 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Amen, Mike.
25 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:23 pm
i love that jeter went for it! meacham the aggressor !
26 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Good, aggressive play from Jeter and Meacham. Had Barajas held onto the ball, Jeter might have been out. Still, I like it–score runs.
27 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Ah, Barajas never had the ball.
28 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Yanks score 2 early, good situational hitting even without hits. Good to stake Wang.
29 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:28 pm
webgem from robbie
30 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Ok I wil try to get through as much of the game as I can before I collapse.
31 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:29 pm
No Mike. Remember only members of the Nation can be on web gems.
32 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:29 pm
wang isn’t anywhere near jorge’s glove
33 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:31 pm
hey tim- you’re probably right about that. that steve bethiaume is a total sox partisan and a moron to boot.
34 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:31 pm
At least Cano has been good in the field. He’s slick with the leather.
Tim, good to see you. Your gauntlet of ceremonies must be exhausting.
35 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:32 pm
The ceremonies have been pretty punishing. Anything for my second family.
36 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Wang–4 ground outs, 2 K’s. Not too shabby.
37 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Lots of food and beverages, Tim?
38 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Could be worse, Tim. You could be the groom. (Just kidding).
39 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Wang is at 26 pitches, very efficient.
40 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:34 pm
I have eaten more seafood in the past couple days then I have in a full year.
41 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:35 pm
hip hip!!!
42 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Couldn’t script it better. Standing O for Hip-Hip, and the “ham” (j/k) gets a hit.
43 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Welcome back, Jorge! Single in his first at-bat back, and great (and not surprising) that he got a big hand from the fans.
44 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Hahaha Mike S. You have no idea what he’s going through.
45 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I have to split. I’m bringing the family to the pool–it’s hot and sunny, and the water slides beckon. Enjoy the game, and I’ll catch up later–maybe after GLG’s softball game.
46 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Show me something, Cano.
47 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:38 pm
have fun jason
48 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:40 pm
one of best at bats in ages
49 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Cano with an 8 pitch at bat and goes to left field. Nice job Robbie.
50 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Good. Gotta start somewhere, start with that.
51 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Wilson Betemit should be executed by electric chair.
52 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:41 pm
i know he hit the homer yesterday, but i HATE betemt
53 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I would rather see Eric Duncan get a shot a 1st then Betemit
54 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:42 pm
put him in “Old Sparky” tim
55 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:43 pm
melky swung through ball 4 on that 3-1
56 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Eric? I’m not an Eric Duncan fan, put it that way.
As for the MLB draft, some good things. It isn’t overanalyzed by ESPN for a whole month beforehand, and no endless Mel Kiper/ Chris Berman .
57 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Sorry not Eric I mean Shelley.
58 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:48 pm
i think they already given up on shelley. it’s a shame. i don’t think they gave him much of a shot. girardi clearly has his “favorites”
farnsy for example
59 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:49 pm
wang—throw some strikes, willya?
60 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:52 pm
i’m sorry but i’m not interested in their prostate cancer guest…stick to baseball during a game
61 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:52 pm
What is with the umprinig?
62 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:54 pm
wang hasn’t been hitting posada’s glove at all today, and now he’s out of control
63 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:58 pm
thank you captain!
64 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Wow. Nice play Derek and nice K Wanger.
65 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Good play by Jeter.
66 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:11 pm
With 5 minutes to pick and the Yanks picking 28th, it’ll be a while.
67 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Way to strand the runners. Damn.
68 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:11 pm
typical 2008 yankee inning…
69 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Got to hold them. I probably won’t last much beyond another hour. Wedding rehersal tomorrow.
70 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:17 pm
you think a 2-0 lead will hold up? i don’t
71 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:18 pm
and just as i say that he gives up the lead.
72 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:18 pm
crap. tied
73 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Where the hell was that pitch? Jeez, kill this umpiring crew. God Damn it. F*** Matt Stairs, *(**ing Candians.
74 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:23 pm
RUNS, NOW!
75 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:35 pm
watching wang is painful
76 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:38 pm
God, I hate Sterling and Waldman when they discuss minor leagues. It’s like they never want to give anyone a chance.
Great. Melky drops the ball and a possible DP turns into a run.
77 Tim The Wizard // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:39 pm
This is pathetic to watch. I am going to bed. See you tomorrow.
78 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Wang lost it. 7-2. He hasn’t done anything since May 2nd.
79 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:43 pm
i’m over this team…at least for today. sickening. wang has been HORRIBLE.
80 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Seeing Selig announce the picks is painful.
81 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I go away for something to eat I come back to this. Just awful
82 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 2:49 pm
what the hell is with this team.
83 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Cheap SF for A-Rod.
84 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Betemit goes deep. 7-6.
85 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:44 pm
What the heck has happened while I was gone? Wang struggled again, I see. Good to see Betemit homer, too bad he can’t produce. :-)
86 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:46 pm
I see Hawkins wasn’t good in the seventh, either. The Yanks HAVE to hold it here. It’s a one-run game.
87 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Veras with the DP ball, and now a K. Clutch pitching from the kid.
88 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Melky, had he caught the ball, had a easy DP to get the runner. Clank. Opened the floodgates and Wang got hammered again.
89 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Betemit with an impressive 3-6-1. Just when you think the guy can’t play first, he does something Giambi almost never does. At least Betemit can make the throw.
90 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Terrible, Mike. Just terrible. Did Wang let it affect him, or did Toronto hit good pitches?
91 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Sorry. Had a phone interview this morning, and the result is that I start a temp. job on the 16th. Not full-time, but something is better than nothing, esp. after being unemployed 15 months out of the last 20. Still on phone with temp. company regarding contract, background checks, etc., so my attention is diverted.
92 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Rolen made that 5-3 on Jeter look easy.
93 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I hope it goes well for you Mike
94 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Congratulations, Mike! No sweat, I’ll touch base later, but may continue to comment just to type out loud, so to speak.
95 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:54 pm
The temp. job is full-time. I meant not perm., but it’s something.
I think it was just the same as what we’ve seen from Wang for the last month. Just lack of command, getting hit the 2nd time around the order, etc.
96 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Stand-up double for BA, nice piece of hitting to left-center. Gotta plate that run, A-Rod.
97 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Interesting that lefty Downs is coming in versus A-Rod, who is 6-13 against him.
98 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Good for you, Mike. I sensed that it was job related when you mentioned appointment. Outstanding.
99 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Scutaro couldn’t have been better positioned, like half a shift, nearly behind second.
100 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Plate that run, Matsui.
101 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Thanks.
102 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Yanks pick still about 35-40 minutes away. Damn. Just like in the 3rd, A-Rod and Matsui let Yanks down.
103 jasonheartland // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:03 pm
So much for that rally, Matsui K’s.
104 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Veras got screwed there.
I guess it worked out okay though.
105 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:27 pm
that TOTAL LOSER robbie cano
106 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:28 pm
thanks for the DP
107 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:28 pm
God, did Selig just butcher a name.
108 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I get the feelin the yanks don’t want to win this.
109 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Benemit singles - failure to get bunt down costs a run
110 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Damn it Cano you really messed up this inning
111 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:34 pm
WP! Single will give Yanks lead & bring in Mo.
112 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Rats. Wilkerson leapt at the wall and caught it to end the 8th.
113 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:36 pm
oh that was SO SO close…well that was a great effort from damon. no fault to him
114 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Yanks now on the clock.
115 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:42 pm
how LONG do we have to put up with this “pitcher”?
116 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:43 pm
yanks get garret cole RHP
117 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:44 pm
(scott boras client)
118 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Farnsworth(less). Sucks like usual, gives up a run on three hits and the boo-birds are out.
DFA the bum, already.
Yanks take Gerrit Cole, RHP from Orange Lutheran HS in CA. Supposedly has a 93-96 MPH fastball. I’ll try to find out more about him later.
119 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Garret cole is are first pick.
120 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Was he the best player left we could have got.
121 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Cole ranked #9 pitcher available by Baseball America.
122 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:49 pm
i have no idea nick. we have a very good draft guy named oppenheimer who knows what he’s doing…
123 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Can’t answer, Nick. At 18, you are going by scouting reports and hope. … and you never know.
124 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:50 pm
great catch melky…but too little too late
125 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Who was the best pitcher of all to get. Also who was the best positional player to get. Sorry im not good with this
126 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:56 pm
buster posey, a catcher is one of the top guys…a kid named beckham-a shortstop was taken first by the rays
127 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:59 pm
so what do you say about a team that has been scoring at least 5 runs per game in the last week or so, but losing most of those games?
128 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 4:59 pm
It’s hard to say…it’s so much different than football. From what I understand, the Pirates got a decent player. This Kelly that Boston drafted has committed to play football at Tennessee.
A few years back, the Yanks drafted Brien Taylor amid much hoopla. He injured his arm in a fight and never came close to making it. #1 pick in the whole draft. Nothing.
129 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Figures. A run. Damn you Farnsworth(less)!
130 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:01 pm
8-7! Giambi pitch hitting
131 Mike Sommer // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:01 pm
HR!!!!!! the BIg G WINS IT!!!!

Noooo I missed it. But who cares we win
134 mike f // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:04 pm
we sure needed this win, didn’t we?
gotta get rid of worthless tho…
135 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:05 pm
It almost feels unfair that Farnsworthless get the win
136 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:05 pm
And there’s the blast.
A game the Yankees should never lost and never won. I like the winning thing better.
Sometimes, you just have to smile and say - I’ll take it
137 Jason // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:06 pm
THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!! I was watching as I make dinner before GLG’s softball game, and I knew, JUST KNEW, that A-Rod’s seeing-eye single would count for something. Big G, Big G with the huge walk-off. Just enormous. That’s EXACTLY what they–and we–needed.
138 Nick.K // Jun 5, 2008 at 5:10 pm
