AAA: Dan McCutchen is still adjusting to the transition to AAA. In his 2nd start for SWB after being called up, he takes another loss (4-2 at AA, 0-2, 4.91 at AAA). 4 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 walk, 4 K, 2 HR given up. SWB loses 5-2.
AA: Trenton scored 4 in the bottom of the 8th for a come-from-behind 7-4 win. George Kontos (3.21) gave up only 2 R in 7 IP, but Zach Kroenke gave up 2 in 2/3 of an inning. Colin Curtis had 3 hits, HR, 2 RBI. Cody Ehlers had a double, 3 RBI. Kevin Russo (2b, 3B, LF) had 3 hits (.318). Reegie Corona and Edwar Gonzalez 2 hits each.
A (advanced): After blowing a 4-1 lead by giving up 3 in the bottom of the 8th, Tampa scored in the top of the 9th and won 5-4. Grant Duff gave up 1 R in 4 IP (2.18). Ben Blumenthal had 2 doubles. Kevin Smith 3 hits, 2 RBI. Tim Battle 2 hits, 1 RBI.
A: Charleston won 2-1 on HRs by Abe Almonte and Justin Snyder (2b, .300). Yeah! 18 year old Jairo Heredia, removed after only one inning in his last start, was back. I guess they are babying him along, as he went 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 2 Ks. At 18, no problem, especially since he missed a month. I really like what I’ve seen of the 18 year old from last year at GCL Rookie league and this year at A ball (3.04). Noel Castillo (5-2, 3.39) went 6 IP of relief, 1 R, 5 H, 1 walk, 5 K. Scoreless inning, 2 Ks, 15th save for Jonathan Ortiz (1.85). 24 1/3 IP, 27 K, 4 walks for him.
News from Pete Abraham on Dellin Betances:
I also asked Cashman about Dellin Betances, who is on the disabled list. He has a “tired shoulder” and was shut down as a precaution. This season has been the most he has thrown over an extended period of time. The numbers bear that out:
2005 High school in Brooklyn: 41.2 innings
2006 rookie ball: 23.1 innings
2007 Class A ball: 25 innings
2008 Class A ball: 55 innings
It’s safe to say that the 20 year old Betances is some ways away.
I’m seeing news that 20 year old Zach McAllister has been promoted to Tampa from Charleston. Zach was 6-3, 2.45 at Charleston. In 62 IP, he had an excellent K/BB ratio of 53/8.
Pete also has a link to the recently-wed Mariah Carey throwing out a pitch in Japan. You can see it here .
Two observations. One, with an outfit like that, who cares how she throws…
and Two, hopefully that lefty pitcher on the mound for the Yomiyuri Giants throws better than Igawa.
Wait. MARIAH throws better than Igawa.
