Game 38. Yanks 5, Tigers 2. Back to .500. Rasner succeeds again, Betemit hurt.

May 10th, 2008 at 12:57 pm · 99 Comments

Recap: Darrell Rasner once again gave the Yanks six strong innings, (2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and Derek Jeter hit his first HR of the year as the Yanks got back to .500. Kyle Farnsworth got in and out of trouble in the 7th, and Joba and Mo closed out the game with their usual 8th and 9th excellence. Gonzo is coming back, since Wilson Betemit hurt a hammy running to second on a double and is DL’d. As for Alby, looks like no surgery, but he’ll be out for some time. For some details, hit more. I did watch the game with friends, then stayed to watch the Celts, so I wasn’t around. At least the Yanks won.

Fox game today. 3:55 or so start.

YANKEES
Damon LF (back in lineup)
Jeter SS (still waiting for 1st HR or SB. Not counting 1995 (rookie callup) or 2003 (injury), this matches the latest in his career that he’s searching for HR #1. OPS+ just 99 )
Abreu RF
Matsui DH (hitting streak stopped last night)
Giambi 1B (looks like he’s heating up?)
Cabrera CF
Cano 2B (see Giambi)
Betemit 3B (see below)
Moeller C (interesting. Molina’s bat that much a liability?)
Rasner RHP (1-0, 3.00)

It’ll be interesting to see what Betemit’s defense is like today. When will he realize his potential? But then it’s not like Ensberg’s done anything. Either one could be trade bait. Bring back Gonzo. He doesn’t have the power the other two can provide, but is better defensively. Ensberg and Betemit combined: 20 for 86. (.233) 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 walks, 25 strikeouts. Get well soon, A-Rod.

How badly was Cano going? He’s just about doubled his OPS+ this week. At 51. it’s still horrible.

Albaladejo on 15-day DL pending MRI results. Great Britton does a U-Turn and heads back to the Yanks.

Heading to a friend’s soon. Feel free to comment.

I feel sorry for Britton always up and down AAA to the Majors. When he does stay up they don’t play him its not like he’s done anything bad.

  • 2 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 2:19 pm

I’m in full agreement about the bench/reserve 3B situation, Mike. Betemit was brutal in the field yesterday, though he actually had two hits. I get the impression that Ensberg isn’t long for the Yankees. Betemit needs to show consistent pop in his bat and cut WAY down on the K’s to justify his place. Gonzo looms, and he probably would never have struggled at third as badly as Betemit did yesterday. He saw lots of hard-hit balls last night, but looked timid at times.

  • 3 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 2:47 pm

People looking at Ensberg’s 2005 season of 36 HR and 101 RBI were forgetting WHERE he put it up….Enron/Minutemaid…315 down the line at 362 to LCF. Fence, what, not even half the size of the Monster? Heck, VERY inviting.

  • 4 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Indeed Mike, and the ball just flat-out flies out of that ballpark. Ensberg’s 2005 numbers would have cut in half–at least–playing in Yankee Stadium. 20 of his 36 HRs in 2005 were at home, and none of his 36 homers were to right–all to left to center.

    No Buck and McCarver? Good.

  • 6 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Heading to a freind’s soon to watch game. Didn’t get together last night, will today for game.

  • 7 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I have radio for the game due to blackout, which is OK.

  • 8 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Lots of good food and drink there today, Mike?

  • 9 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:42 pm

**friend’s** Yup. Shelley doing the lineup. Seems like he has a WWF career coming after the baseball career.

  • 10 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:43 pm

JD chased the slider, one out.

  • 11 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Shelley is hilarious. When Kevin Long was doing the lineup a couple weeks ago and Shelley was just called back up, he screamed just off camera when Long said his name. Really funny.

    FINALLY!!! # 1

  • 13 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    The Captain! Finally!

  • 14 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:45 pm

That’s a good start, I love the early runs.

  • 15 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 3:45 pm

“Jeter hasn’t hit a home run in his last 128 at bats.”

Next pitch Jeter hits it out.

  • 16 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Thanks to whoever uttered that line.

  • 17 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Abreu rips a single. Keep it rolling, Matsui.

  • 18 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Started 15 minutes earlier than usual.

  • 19 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Yes, Matsui! First and second. Heat it up, Giambi.

  • 20 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:47 pm

2 on. Let’s see what the Big G does. He and Cano look like they are heating up.

  • 21 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I think they made a mid-week change, Mike.

BTW, Jason from Boogie-Down Bronx is at today’s game.

  • 22 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Giambi’s HR last night passed Gil Hodges.

  • 23 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Oh, Good for him. Nice. Hope he brings us a W.

  • 24 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:49 pm

    Bases loaded for Mighty Melky.

  • 25 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:50 pm

The walk to Giambi loads the bases for Melky the Clutch.

  • 26 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Was the first pitch outside? It looked it via Gameday.

  • 27 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Always liked the Tiger’s home uniforms. Not flashy, old-style, the English D.

  • 28 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I agree, I like the script D myself. Simple but elegant.

  • 29 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:54 pm

walks in a run. Cano up, and I think he’s heating up. I expect something good here.

  • 30 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 3:54 pm

    Bases loaded walk! 2-0

  • 31 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Great at-bat, Melky the Clutch! Eight-pitch bases-loaded walk makes it 2-0 for RC. heat it up, RC.

  • 32 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Same here, Mike. I have a good feeling this whole inning.

  • 33 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Have World Series videos. Worst by far, 1979. Orioles garish orange and the yellow of Pirates. Sunday Pirates Yellow on Yellow. Stargell looks like an overfed canary.

I can’t blame Robbie for the DP. He did smoke it, and that’s a good sign.

  • 34 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    That’s just bad luck.

  • 35 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Shoot, hard-hit 4-6-3 end it. Should have had more, but 2-0 is good, and they made Bonderman throw 30 pitches. Good start to set up Rasner.

  • 36 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Want to see how Rasner does in the 1st before heading out.

  • 37 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Can’t complain about the contact, just the result. The White Sox had those ugly uniforms, gray/white with “SOX” across the front. They looked like the players wore kaleidoscopes.

  • 38 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Glad you liked the recap. Graphic and the (breaks down weeping) line.

  • 39 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Whew! They actually retired Granderson, one down.

  • 40 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:00 pm

That’s the damnedest thing. Abreu drifted over like he had a simple catch in RCF, then he’s like where is it, and it was gone.

  • 41 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:01 pm

The graphic was great, Mike. I expected a flushing toilet.

Sterling lost the ball and called it an easy catch. Thanks, John. 2-1.

  • 42 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Maybe next time, esp. if we want to flush Igawa.

  • 43 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:03 pm

    Whats was a bit weird

  • 44 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:03 pm

1st career HR for the kid. Rasner had a decent inning otherwise.

  • 45 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Not bad, Rasner–giving up the solo shot but getting three outs on 12 pitches.

  • 46 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:04 pm

If you can clip Igawa’s swirling head into a toilet, I’ll be most impressed, Mike.

  • 47 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Can’t blame Sterling on that one. You are trained (or should be) to watch the OF. Abreu lost the ball, just drifted over like it was an easy catch, no distress signal until the last minute, and meanwhile the ball was way behind him and in the seats. Sterling was doing what he should there—watching Abreu, who had no clue.

  • 48 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Wish I could, Jason. Betemit tagged one, but Granderson runs it down.

  • 49 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:07 pm

He admitted to losing the ball in the sun, and it seems the sun is a problem all around today.

  • 50 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:07 pm

2 long outs. Both hit well but stayed in the park.

  • 51 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:07 pm

The Yanks are hitting the ball hard all around today. That’s a good sign.

  • 52 Mike Sommer // May 10, 2008 at 4:09 pm

    Catch you later.

  • 53 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:09 pm

JD caught looking. It looked a bit outside on Gameday, but that’s imprecise.

  • 54 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:10 pm

    Enjoy the game, Mike.

  • 55 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Rasner K’d Sheffield the Selfish, two down. So far, so good.

  • 56 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Nice 1-2-3 for Rasner in the second, throwing 14 pitches.

  • 57 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:18 pm

26 pitches through 2 with 20 strikes Impressive

  • 58 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Am I the only one who can’t stand Ken Rosenthal

  • 59 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I can’t stand him either, Nick. For an “insider,” his information is often basic.

  • 60 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Bonderman’s 1-2-3 on 9 pitches concerns me that he’s settling in, like last week.

  • 61 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:25 pm

    Lead-off single by Pudge.

  • 62 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Sac moves him over, one down.

  • 63 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Granderson’s come-backer holds Pudge, two down. Nice, get the third out here, Rasner.

  • 64 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Nice, pop to Cano ends the third. 10 pitches in the third, 36 through three–29 strikes. Excellent.

I have to split, Nick. I’ll try to stop back later.

  • 65 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:41 pm

    Cano scores, RBI for Betemit

  • 66 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:42 pm

    We’re dropping like flies.

  • 67 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:45 pm

    Now Betemit is hurt. Hamstring

  • 68 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Damon has not been able to figure out Bonderman

  • 69 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 5:03 pm

    Bobby doubles Jeter home

  • 70 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 5:06 pm

giambi with the double 5-1 Yanks

  • 71 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Jeter having a great game in the field

  • 72 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 5:48 pm

That stinks about Betemit, just as he hit a bit. I hope that means the Yanks will bring up Gonzo.

    Rasner was terrific.

  • 73 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 5:49 pm

Girardi with a very quick hook and brings in Farnsworth. Completely disagree with that move.

  • 74 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 5:49 pm

Cool Hand Nuke in against Cabrera.

  • 75 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 5:50 pm

    Good Job Rasner

  • 76 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 5:50 pm

It was a bit hasty, Nick. I would have given him another batter.

  • 77 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 5:51 pm

There seems to be this sense that Rasner has a 90-pitch ceiling of effectiveness. He could have gone to that and a bit past as long as he didn’t get into too much trouble. Nuke’s job is to make it academic with a good stint.

  • 78 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Not good there, and Nuke hasn’t done the job. Count on some justifiable second-guessing for removing Rasner.

  • 79 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Hand it to Nuke for escaping the jam, but I’d disagree somewhat with Sterling that he “did a great, great job.” He did a great job of escaping after allowing two hits and bringing the tying run to the plate.

    5-2 Yankees.

  • 80 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:06 pm

My family is having a party today so I have been on and off the game but what I have seen Jeter has been in the field today.

  • 81 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:07 pm

He’s had a good day, Nick. How’s the party? What’s the occasion, if I may ask?

  • 82 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Good sign that Cano’s outs are hard-hit.

  • 83 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:10 pm

My cousin’s getting married. The partys ok but with awful music

  • 84 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:12 pm

I think Farnsworth may now have a better ERA than Joba

  • 85 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Boy, did Joba set up Granderson for that slider, fastballs to 2-2, then the slider in and Granderson couldn’t check his swing.

  • 86 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:13 pm

As of retiring Joyce, they both have an ERA of 3.

  • 87 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Rasner, Farnsworth and Joba all have 3.00

  • 88 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:15 pm

    1-2-3 for Joba. Nice!

  • 89 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:15 pm

That knocked Joba’s ERA back down below Kyle’s. It’s now 2.93

  • 90 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:16 pm

1-2-3 for Joba on 11 pitches. Now Mariano (if it’s still a 3-run lead) to salt it.

  • 91 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:17 pm

I’d love Joba to have an ERA below 1, but it’s just unrealistic. As long as he’s dominating the strike zone, he’ll be fine most of the time. He’ll have some lapses, but he’s very focused for a kid. He’ll be fine.

  • 92 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:25 pm

    Time for Mariano now.

  • 93 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:29 pm

    Ordonez singled to center

  • 94 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:30 pm

C’mon Mo! Show Miggy how it’s done in the AL

  • 95 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    6-4-3 DP! One more, Mo.

  • 96 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:32 pm

The ol’ 6-4-3 after Magglio’s lead-off, first-pitch single, two down.

  • 97 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:34 pm

    Another 1-2-3 for Mo.

  • 98 Jason // May 10, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Heck of a win. Rasner’s been excellent, throwing strikes, allowing only one walk in two starts. Huge, and back to .500.

  • 99 Nick.K // May 10, 2008 at 6:34 pm

    And The Yankees Win!!!!!!!

    Back to .500.

    Let’s do it again tomorrow
