I have a meeting of the Yankee Fan Club to attend, so I’ll be back in mid-game.
YANKEES
Damon LF (has really picked it up after the “Tough Love.” 154 OPS+ leads the team. Leads team in doubles and walks).
Jeter SS (.313, but OPS+ just 103. Work on the walks, Derek. Just 7 of the 35 hits XBH)
Abreu RF (.306, 21 RBI leads team)
Matsui DH (14 g. hitting streak. .324 leads team, OPS+ 150)
Giambi 1B (.150. Thank goodness for the walks, one behind Damon)
Cabrera CF (Mighty Melky leads the team with six HR)
Cano 2B (.154; OPS+ 30)
Betemit 3B (Mighty Mouse returns [Here I come to save the day]….maybe not. 2 for 13, 7 K).
Molina C (defensively fine, but .224 and only 1 walk. OPS+ 59)
Pettitte LHP (3-3, 3.93)
Pete Abraham’s Notes:
As you can see by the lineup, Wilson Betemit has been activated off the DL. No word yet on the move to clear a spot but I wouldn’t imagine this is good news for Alberto Gonzalez. … Contrary to reports on the radio yesterday, Kei Igawa has not been called up. At least not yet. … Bobby Abreu is 9 of his last 16 with five RBI. … Derek Jeter is 9 of his last 18 with six runs scored. … Johnny Damon is 14 of 34, raising his average from .244 to .295. … … Then there’s Jason Giambi (1 for his last 21). But he has somehow managed to drive in four runs during those seven games.
My note: I hope it’s not Gonzo. Maybe they DFA Ensberg. But if Gonzo goes down, it leaves Betemit as the sub at 2B and SS, and I really don’t like that.
Catch you mid-game. Let’s hope Betemit actually turns into Mighty Mouse.

Wilson Betemit arrives to “save the day”….or maybe not.
Recap: I was busy with a lot of things all day long, so the recap is it. Thanks to all who were commenting live throughout. Two pitches cost the Yanks tonight, and David Dellucci was the kryptonite to the Joba “Superman” act. The Yanks got one in the first, but Jhonny Peralta, who took Pettitte deep in Cleveland, does it again with a 2-run HR in the 4th. Jason Giambi, whose forceout gave the Yanks that run in the first, doubled in Matsui to tie the game, then Cano singled in Giambi. Joba came in for the 8th, but this time he failed. He walked two, then Dellucci homered off him. 5-3 Indians.
It happens. Joba’s 22. Even the great Mo has blown a few.
Meanwhile, check out the Minor League Report. Finally, Ian pitches like we expected…

As per a previous comment, I’m in favor of Gonzo staying. If they DFA’d Ensberg, I wouldn’t lose sleep over that. He wasn’t pathetic, but he wasn’t very productive either, and Mike F. makes a good point in a different post about Betemit as a righty bat. Ensberg can join him in that category–not bad in the field, not good from the right side. I’d let Gonzo have more time.
At least Betemit is batting lefty tonight against Carmona. With Cano still waiting to get going, that 7-8-9 worries me.

hey everyone…
yes jas, 789 is pretty bleak
3 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Nancy Newman should be executed.
4 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:02 pm
who the F is nancy newman?
5 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:02 pm
She does the YES pre-games. Allow me to amend this. Steve Phillips should be executed.

shamwow
7 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:06 pm
i hope andy can get ahead of the cleveland hitters to keep that pitch count down
8 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:08 pm
I just want to win the damn game. I don’t care if we win 10-9, 1-0, or 30-3.
9 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:08 pm
no victor martinez—-niiiice
10 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:08 pm
30-3 would be nice
11 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Nice 1-2-3 inning Andy. Let’s rock Fausto and pay his candy ass back for the ALDS.
12 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Can we execute Jason Giambi after Steve Phillips
13 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:13 pm
hey nick…hows it going?
14 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Not yet Nick. Let us see what he does after this week.
15 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:15 pm
i think the keyn to getting this win is being patient with carmona…he can be wild
16 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Its ok just tired had a very long day.
17 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Hi guys.
18 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I agree about the need to be patient with Carmona.
19 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:18 pm
hey jason…
you have a long commute to cleege each day , right nick?
20 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:19 pm
yeah its a hour train ride there and hour back. I also have work so it tough
21 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:19 pm
college, that is
22 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:21 pm
So far, the Yankees are reading Carmona well, including his hard sinker.
23 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:22 pm
That’s a lot, Nick. Kudos to you for doing it.
24 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Matsui singles, 15-game hitting streak, but Big G up. Drive the ball, Giambi.
25 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Giambi will hit the ball the other way. Believe…
26 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:22 pm
so my buddy dj’d a party in st maartin…he sent me a bottle of absinthe today…
quite a kick!

29 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Jason Giambi that is
30 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Is it just me or does David Cone end every sentece with either the word here or there.
31 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:25 pm
what a bust he is…
at least he ran to 1st quickly ( fairly)
melky…did you have to hit so quickly?
32 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Yankees and Giambi got lucky on the attempted 3-6-1 DP, 1-0 Yankees. I had the feeling he wouldn’t get the ball out of the infield. He might have been out, but I’ll take it.
33 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:25 pm
He does Tim, there.
34 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:26 pm
No more Giambi batting 5th, especially with 2 lefties hitting in front of him.
35 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:26 pm
i wish he had just walked in a run…
they totally let carmona off the hook
36 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:27 pm
I’m not big on the three lefties in a row either, Nick. I’d sooner have Melky 5th.
37 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:27 pm
That was letting him off, Mike. With the lineup the Yanks have tonight, they need more than one run with the bases loaded and one out.
38 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:28 pm
giambi should be 8th IMO…then the two slow guys would be next one anaother
39 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Easy 1-3, one down.
40 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:29 pm
i must say that i really enjoy coney in the booth
41 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Pettite fans Gutierrez, two down.
42 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I do also, Mike. He’s so smart, like Leiter, and intense like Leiter. You get the impression that if asked to remove the tie and grab the glove, they still would in a second.
43 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:32 pm
damn, boston already up 2 on the useless tigers
44 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:32 pm
nice play andy…cool and collected
45 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:32 pm
I love, LOVED Cone as a Yankees. I always said that if there was one key start, especially in the playoffs, to get a win I’d choose Cone. Before his aneurysm, he threw hard gas and gave batters a ton of looks-side-arm, off-speed, could buzz a 95-mph fastball inside or over the black outside. Cone in his prime could do it all, and would never ever give in to batters.
46 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:33 pm
The whole Tigers team should be executed. Dice-K walks 8 last night and they do nothing against him. Disgraceful…
47 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Pettite fields his position well, a 1-2-3 to get the bats out there quickly. 14 pitches in each of the first two IP for Pettite.
48 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:34 pm
MLB.com— a-rod may begin some “baseball activities” wednesday…good news
49 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Disgraceful is exactly the word for that, Tim. Stinking disgraceful.
50 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I can’t wait until A-Rod is back and healthy.
51 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Andy Pettitte trying to do a Mussina.
52 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Boston now up 3-0.
53 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:35 pm
there is no WAY that dice-bb deserved that “win” if i were francona i’d be taking him out of games after 4 2/3 innings until he learned to throw some strikes. that might teach him
54 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:36 pm
who is “pitching” for the tigers tonight?
55 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Robbie is still missing
56 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Right back to before, Betemit, F9, two down.
57 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:38 pm
if betemit is known for his bat…then i’d get rid of him ASAP
3 automatic outs…nobody even working the count to be even remotely useful.
58 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 7:38 pm
I never remember Pheralta having that much range. Where the hell is the plate discipline?
59 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Only 8 pitches for Carmona that inning.
60 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:39 pm
That wasn’t good 8 pitch inning for Carmona
61 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Nate Robertson is pitching for the Tigers.
62 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:40 pm
That 3-year, $21 million deal for Robertson was money down the toilet, and I thought it was bad at the time.
63 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:40 pm
ahh that explains it of course…a guy that we should have stomped into the ground
64 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Cheap hit off Pettite.
65 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:41 pm
I feel sorry for Shelly and Gonzo they do such a great job. Then they get sent down for Betemit and Giambi bit of a joke.
66 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:42 pm
well they haven’t sent shelley down, but i know what you mean nick.
67 Nick.K // May 6, 2008 at 7:43 pm

69 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:44 pm
that goddamn gerry davis…the yankees sworn enemy
70 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:45 pm

76 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 7:48 pm
yadi is unbelievable

i love watching yadi throw behind a guy at 1st base and gun them down
78 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 7:49 pm
I wonder if the Molina father, like Ichiro’s Dad, made the Molina brothers practice such plays as throwing out batters from the knees in between platters of pork chops.

103 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 8:20 pm
i refuse to blame you for the homerun jason
104 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Heck of a walk by Matsui, on nine pitches. Big G, wake up for God’s sake.

last night i dreamed that beckett got me falsely accused of shoplifting candy
116 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I think he swung and missed at that inside pitch early in the at-bat to try to move Giambi over. Otherwise, it would have been inexcusable.
117 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 8:26 pm
cano is waking

RC with a clutch RBI base hit through the hole, 3-2. RC and Giambi respond to Tough Love in the same inning. What are the odds?

Who’d a thought it Giambi and Cano with RBIs this inning
120 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:27 pm
It’s coming slowly but surely, Mike.
121 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Good to see RC with a smile on his face on base for a change. That’s long overdue.

133 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 8:33 pm
That is why he is Grady Sizemore.
134 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Sizemore is some kind of fielder, robbing the Yankees of at least a run, but 3-2 Yankees and they made Carmona throw 30 pitches that frame, 74 through 4.
135 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I love that the Yankees responded for two right after the Indians scored two. They got the lead back right away.

158 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Stop chasing the slider down and in, Melky.
159 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Let’s just get Carmona out of the game and put the smackdown on the Indians bullpen.
160 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 8:52 pm
utterly pathetic…melky should have under no circumstances swung…no matter what he thought he saw
161 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Melky looked bad there, and the bad call at third cost the Yankees a shot to add on. But the Yankees worked Carmona for 21 that inning, 95 through 5.
162 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 8:54 pm
It was certainly a ball, Mike. What bothers me is he laid off the same pitch for ball just one pitch beforehand.

175 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:04 pm
they gotta take pitches from perez
176 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:05 pm
The Yankees did very well against Carmona. They didn’t score enough, but they sure worked him over.
177 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:05 pm
sizemore saved his ass
178 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Joba sure is rested for a long stint, Tim. But if Nuke is available and not suspended, I’d use him and save Joba for the rest of the series. I think they’ll need him soon enough.
179 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Indeed, Mike.
180 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:07 pm
i’m not sure i’m comfortable yet with farnsy in a one run game
181 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I’m disappointed the Yankees sent down Gonzo. The kid deserved to be here more than Betemit. His glove is outstanding.
182 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Nor I, Mike. But he’s been good lately, and if Joba goes 30 pitches in the 7th and 8th, he can’t go tomorrow.
183 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Kennedy went 7 1/3, one hit, 8 K in SWB.
184 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:08 pm
oh i see what you mean. yeah i don’t want joba to throw 2 innings either
185 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Let Pettite hopefully retire Hafner, and hopefully Nuke can get 2/3.
186 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Molina chased a bad ball on 2-0.
187 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Ian Kennedy threw 7.1 shut out innings at SWB tonight. 8 Ks, no BBs, 1 hit.
188 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:12 pm
see what happens when you are patient with perez?
189 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Nice patience from Molina to get JD to the plate.
190 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Kennedy was something, Tim. I’m sure Stat-O-Matic will have something to say about it, too.
191 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:14 pm
not a good at bat at all from johnny.
192 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:14 pm
JD looked bad on that K.
193 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:15 pm
don’t they know the scouting report on perez? he doesn’t throw strikes!
194 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:15 pm
If I get a teaching job close to the Lehigh Valley, one of my first moves is to join their Yankees Fan Club. It sounds like they have a very good thing going.
195 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:16 pm
are you going to look there jason?
196 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:18 pm
just what we need, a bloop
197 Mike Sommer // May 6, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Back, but have a lot to catch up on.
198 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Hafner couldn’t have placed that ball any luckier in shallow right.
199 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:19 pm
How goes it, Mike? How was the meeting?
200 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I’m going to look wherever jobs are open, Mike. It’s really a seller’s market.
201 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Pull it together here, Pettite.
202 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Big K by Pettite of Francisco, one down.
203 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Pettite did NOT like getting pulled there. Nuke, be Cool Hand Nuke right now.
204 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:21 pm
great job from andy..
please farnsy…throw strikes
205 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:22 pm
when will you have your degree jason?
206 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:24 pm
It may be in about one year. Lots of writing still left to do, but doable. I love what I’m doing, and where I am, but it’s time to move on and get a college job.
207 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Cool Hand Nuke just blew Shoppach away, two down.
208 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:26 pm
pretty…
209 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Farnsinator gets the job done.
210 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:27 pm
F8, hand it to Nuke, and in a rare mid-inning stint by the way, for shutting it down. Good job, Cool Hand Nuke.
211 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:27 pm
that’s great jason, who knows, maybe you’ll land a job in/near yankeeland
212 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Mike, I’d settle for somewhere south of the Arctic Circle.
213 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:31 pm
lapland just doesn’t work for you, huh?
214 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Jeter ripped F9, one down.
Cool Hand Nuke’s ERA–3.38, not bad, and down almost 2.5 runs over the last three weeks.
215 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:32 pm
I do like their clothes, Mike.
216 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:33 pm
it was a nice looking hit for jeter, too bad it was right at the RF
217 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Abreu looked a bit lost, two down.
218 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:34 pm
duncan should be in
219 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Matsui is 3-3 tonight, and hitting .342. He’s smoking right now.
220 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I forgot to look for Geoff in Section 24 tonight!
221 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:37 pm
oh me too, but there really haven’t been hits down that line
222 Mike Sommer // May 6, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Nice meeting. Have to answer an e-mail. Catching up on game through posts, internet, etc. Good game. Hope for some insurance runs before Joba and Mo. Good to see something from Robbie and the Big G.
223 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:38 pm
ahh..almost big G…
224 Mike Sommer // May 6, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Also good to see Ian get his head together and pitch the way we (and he) know he can.
225 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Tough Love worked in the same inning, Stat-O-Matic.
226 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Kennedy dominated in SWB.
227 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I’d love to see Big G add an insurance bomb here.
228 Tim The Wizard // May 6, 2008 at 9:40 pm
The Tigers really suck.
229 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:40 pm
the slider gets yet another yankee
230 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Instead, he adds a good breeze, three down.
231 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:41 pm
they do tim, it’s what is still killing me about that embarrassing sweep
232 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Except last week against the Yankees, Tim. They owe the Tigers payback.
233 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:43 pm
cano up for player of the game?!?
oh c’mon
234 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Gerry Davis got payback for his blown call on that stolen base last year, getting whacked on the upper shin.
235 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:45 pm
that second pitch inside looked like a strike
236 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:45 pm
No Matsui for player of the game.
237 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Lead-off walk to Sizemore, and he’ll run.
238 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:46 pm
this could be tough
239 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:46 pm
maybe joba should listen to molina
240 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Sac bunt, one down. Hold it here, Joba.
241 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:47 pm
i wish he’d just throw a fastball
242 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Hey Joba, you have a good fastball, use it. At 3-1, now he has to.
243 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:50 pm
oh for god sake
244 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:51 pm
what the hell is wrong with a first pitch FB??
245 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Joba, please fastball, stop. Throw strikes, stop.
246 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Pop 9, and a heck of a throw in from Abreu. Dellucci PH for Gutierrez.
247 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Ah, THERE’S the first-pitch fastball, 0-1.
248 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:54 pm
oh thats just awesome.
thats what you get for walking everyone
249 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Garbage, Joba, a product of all those balls, and leaving that up to Dellucci. Horrible, 5-3 Indians.
250 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Joba left it chest-high, terrible.
251 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:56 pm
maybe NOW he’ll listen to what his veteran catcher calls!
252 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:56 pm
So much for the formula.
253 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 9:58 pm
what a ***ING WASTE of a great start of andy
254 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Abreu’s called out at third is even bigger now.
Joba, take it easy. It’s bound to happen, but shouldn’t from throwing bad breaking pitches.
Time to muster a late-innings comeback.
255 mike f // May 6, 2008 at 10:00 pm
i wouldn’t count on that
256 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Cano, swing or don’t, don’t be indecisive.
257 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Molina, it’s 88, not 98 mph.
258 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:06 pm
F8 won’t cut it, three down, 5-3.
259 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:16 pm
It sure got quiet around here.
260 Mike Sommer // May 6, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Mortality strikes Joba.
Gavin Floyd with the no-no through 8. Gavin Floyd??
261 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:21 pm
JD got cooled off tonight, 0-5.
262 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Floyd flirted with a no-no earlier in the year, through 7 1/3 I believe.
263 Mike Sommer // May 6, 2008 at 10:22 pm
yeah.
264 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:24 pm
F8 from Jeter, two down.
265 Mike Sommer // May 6, 2008 at 10:25 pm
McCutchen was great tonight too. I’ll get it on the report shortly.
266 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Hopefully delayed by several positive and dramatic moments.
267 Jason // May 6, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Just keep watching, Abreu. Game over. I’m going to get working on my own wrap.
