Like this guy and yours truly, Phil needs glasses.
Recap: I have to laugh, as I’ve read for a couple of years how Wang is not an “ace.” The team is 15-16. Wang is 6-0. If that’s not an ace, what is? Yes, he had a bad postseason last year. He is now 52-18 in his career. 8-5. 19-6. 19-7. 6-0. 52-18. .742 winning pct. Without him, they don’t MAKE the postseason. Melky had 2 big ribbies. For more news, including Hughes needing glasses (and what type they should be…) along with news on Posada and some moves, hit more.
From a Google search:
Wang is a royalty rank and a surname in China and Korea. (Chien Ming Wang is Taiwanese).
This article is about Wang as surnames. See Chinese noble and Korean nobility for royalty rank.
Chinese surname
Wang is the commonest Chinese family name and literally means “king” (See Chinese noble#Wang), although the name itself has no royal implications. The “-ang” sound in pinyin is supposed to be pronounced as in German and so the name is frequently mispronounced by English speakers. The name is also frequently transliterated “Wong” especially for people from Hong Kong or from Guangdong. This other transliteration sounds much more similar to the Chinese pronunciation.
Maybe it means King, but to Yankee fans, he is an

Feel free to comment as the game progresses. I have a dinner/raffle to attend, so I’ll miss a lot of the game and will have to catch up later.
YANKEES
Cabrera CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Duncan 1B (Lefty again in Bedard. Damon sits. No Alex. No Jorge. Shel the cleanup guy again.)
Matsui LF
Giambi DH
Ensberg 3B
Molina C
Gonzalez 2B (nice to get him at 2B and bench Cano).
Wang RHP (5-0, 3.23)
See my previous post today and what I wrote about David Robertson. The Yanks must be reading my mind. Chad Jennings reports that the Yanks just promoted him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Hopefully he continues his rapid progression.
News from Pete Abraham:
Jorge Posada has received opinions from all of the doctors (James Andrews, Tim Kremchek and David Altcheck) and all agree that he has rotator cuff tendinitis and will need rest and rehab. Surgery is a possibility but not until the offseason. There does seem to be a little concern about his labrum, too. But the general consensus is that his problem is with the rotator cuff.
Posada will go another 10 days without throwing or swinging then start a two-week rehab period. After that, they’ll determine where he is. He will need minor-league rehab games. We’re looking at early June assuming there no setbacks. Given what happened last time, they will be cautious. I would guess maybe June 10.
Meanwhile, Phil Hughes learned today that he is nearsighted and he is being fitted for glasses. So that explains some stuff as well. He thinks the cracked rib is related to a mechanical flaw, which also explains some stuff.
RHP Jose Veras is here, taking the spot of Hughes.
With the day off coming up on Monday, the Yankees will skip Ian Kennedy’s next start. They won’t need a No. 5 starter until May 10. They’re discussing whether it will be Kennedy or somebody else.
Good about skipping Ian. Maybe he can get his head together. As for Hughes, maybe, like Mr. Magoo, he walked into something and never knew it. With not needing a 5th starter until May 10th, they can load up on the bullpen, which explains Veras.
Hey, without my contacts or glasses, I can barely see the end of my nose. Maybe, as Ty suggests, Phil can go with the “Rick (Wild Thing) Vaughn” look.

Bobby Murcer is back, and in the YES booth. Good for him, and us. The way the Yanks are hitting, maybe he’ll be in the lineup tomorrow… j/k.
A 1-2-3 for Wang in the 1st….but not easy. Two balls hit to the track.
Juan Miranda at SWB goes on the 7-day DL. Meanwhile Wilson Betemit had a leadoff double in the first inning for SWB tonight. Cue the Mighty Mouse theme song…”Here I come to save the day…”
Veras numbers at SWB were 0-0, 9 saves, 1.38 and 21 K in 13 IP.
RBI single for Godzilla gives the Yanks 1-0 lead after one inning.
Gonzo is right in the middle of things as Melky gets a 2-run double. 3-0 Yanks.
On this day in 1939, the Yanks won 22-2 at Detroit. Of course, that wasn’t the main story. The main story was that Babe Dahlgren started at 1B, and someone else didn’t play…that day…or ever again. #4.
And a scoreless third for Wang. If this holds up, he is 6-0, the rest of the team 9-16. The early leader in the CYA derby, for sure.
Well, I gotta head to my dinner/raffle. I’ll catch up with you later. Feel free to comment on the game and I’ll check them out when I return. As Sterling says, Joba and Mo are well rested.
End of 3 1/2….3-0 Yanks and Wang looks good.

Just look at that line up so different to the first day of the season. I don’t like benching Damon he has been hot as of late.

Wow, Girardi with some powerful and thoughtful words about Bobby Murcer. Class act… both of them.
9 Mike Sommer // May 2, 2008 at 7:47 pm
…and Gonzo is in the middle of a rally. 2-run double for the Melkman.

Ichiro just stole a run, taking second and third with one out and scoring on Ibanez’s 4-3. But Wang looked great on the K of Beltre. He’s dealing, Yankees 3-1.

Nuke was really excellent, blowing 2 away in a fourteen-pitch 1-2-3. He’s lowered his ERA almost a run in his last few appearances. I have to hand it to Nuke. He’s been very good of late–Cool Hand Nuke.

Shelley the Scooping Marauder has twice helped Ensberg in the last three outs (one out in the eighth).

Ichiro is some kind of ballplayer. 1,627 hits now in his eighth MLB season, working a bloop single to center off Joba. I say Ichiro is a Hall of Fame player, easily one of the very best of his time.

3U ends the eighth, 3-1 Yankees.

Great stuff as usual, Mike. Wang was again dominant, and is on a huge roll. He had terrific movement on his pitches and won a big game, and terrific pitchers’ duel. I shudder to think where the Yankees would be without him.
I have to say that while Gehrig played his final game more than 30 years before I was born, I feel both profound admiration for him and deep sadness about him when I read and talk about him and his story. In my mind he’s just far and away the best first baseman the game has known. I think with his story, and with so many others including Thurman Munson, there is an underlying story of tragedy to the Yankees success that is a really compelling aspect of the team’s history. It’s never been absent from their greatness.
