Forgetting some games…

In today’s Post, Steve Serby writes about the possibility of the Super Bowl coming to the Meadowlands in 2014 and mentions some, shall I put it, “Cold Weather Classics.” The Ice Bowl being one of them. In the article and a sidebar following, some classic games are forgotten.

  • In 1982, the Freezer Bowl AFC Championship Game between Cincinnati and SD.

Freezer Bowl
Cincy 27, SD 7.

  • The 1948 NFL Title Game. The Blizzard Bowl.

1948 NFL Championship
Philadelphia Eagles 7, Chicago Cardinals 0.

and the 1934 NFL Title Game, the Sneakers Game, in which the NY Giants, down 13-3, scored 27 fourth-quarter points after switching from spikes to sneakers in order to get better traction on a frozen Polo Grounds field. Why no mention of those games?

Hmm…the Canadian Women’s Winter Olympic Hockey Team could be in for a scolding after they brought their party onto the ice. The beer, champagne and stogies could have been kept in the locker room and one player apparently was underage for consumption of alcohol in British Columbia.  The NY Post has pictures.

Funny, I read somewhere one Canadian forgiving the team for its display due to “national pride.” Looking at the pictures, I wonder if that Canadian will be as forgiving when he or she notices that the beer being guzzled by one team member is Coors Light—not Molson or Moosehead. (Others have Molson.)

The USA Men’s Hockey team plays Canada for the gold medal tomorrow.

Apolo Ohno was DQ’d in the final of the 500m, but did win a bronze in a relay—his 8th overall Olympic medal.

Finally, some baseball news. A one-year deal for Felipe Lopez with the Cardinals. After hitting .310 last year, he finally signs on Feb. 26th—two weeks after dumping Bore-a$$.

Update: 4 man bobsled gold for the USA.

Weird day. Kansas and KY lose in college B-B (#1 and #2) and the Celtics lose to the Nets?

The Celtic Leprauchan needs to kick some ass.

Why no mention of those games, Mike? As we both know, that would take some circumspection and knowledge on the part of The Post and other papers who never fail to miss crucial details and events. I remember watching the SD-Cincy game: -59 wind chill, as I told my son a few weeks ago. Br-r-r-r-rutal. Do you remember those old books that talk about the age-old games from the 1930s and 1940s? That’s how I learned about “The Sneakers Game” and Steve Van Buren. In their own way, they were great history books about the sport. LOVE those old stories.

I fondly remember sitting through the Bills-Raiders Divisional playoff game after the 1993 season at Rich Stadium (to which I still refer to it, now Ralph Wilson Stadium after the owner). The high was 0, with a wind chill of -29. I never wore so many clothes. Great time; GREAT TIME. Jim Kelly was phenomenal–27-37, 287 yards in the bitter cold; a flat-out money player. That was when fans were still allowed to bring in a thermos, and my friend John brought in two thermoses of hot chocolate with blackberry brandy. We broke those babies out in the second quarter; much needed. I’ll never forget Steve Tasker, the greater special teams player I’ve ever seen, plucking a frozen turkey of a football out of mid-air on a kickoff and running it down to the Raiders’ 1. I’ll also never forget sitting in the end zone seats for that playoff run, not for the faint of heart, and seeing Mike Ditka giving heckling Bills fans the finger during the game. They deserved it, but so did he.

Sorry, but the references to the cold bring back odd memories this morning.

Sorry, should be “Tasker, the greatest special teams player I’ve ever seen…” Tough to type at 5:45 my time.
