Is something else coming under the Yankees Christmas Tree?

December 22nd, 2009 at 7:02 am · 3 Comments

I read an article yesterday that mentioned the Yankees addressing pitching issues before the New Year. Since today is 12/22, that isn’t far away.

Sam Borden reports today in LoHud (emphasis mine):

Word is that this move, whatever it turns out to be (if it does indeed turn out to be something) is substantive. The last source I spoke to about the Yankees earlier today said pitching was clearly the Yankees next priority but didn’t indicate anything was close so it seems that something either a) heated up quickly; or b) was revived from previous discussions.

Borden lists a couple of possibilities

Javier is the answer. Maybe Damon. I like this. This guy kicked ass stat wise on my fantasy team last year and I think as number 4 he will do fine. It definetly opens the door for a Damon return at 18-19 mill (Even 20) which is not a bad deal for TWO YEARS. What a kick a line-up
    (If they re-sign Damon)
    Jeter
    Damon
    Tex
    A-Rod
    Posada
    Johnson
    Granderson
    Cano
    Swisher

    Rotation
    CC
    AJ
    Petite
    Vasquez
    Joba

    Hughes as link to Mariano

    Then
    Mitre
    Gaudin
    Marte

    Not bad Brian Not Bad

And the rotation matches the Bosox

We’re pretty much in agreement all around, Swedski, including on the possibility that JD returns, which I would welcome. I will only add that I think the Yanks have a better rotation than Boston. Their top three matched Boston’s without question, to me, before the deal for Vasquez. they won the World Series with that top three, and went through Lackey et al. to do it. Now, with a proven innings eater in Vasquez at #4, who might go 15-10, 4.20 ERA, 200 IP, and a K/IP, the Yanks also have a #4 who can go toe-to-toe with any team’s back end. I also agree about Joba starting, although the team might have different ideas about Joba’s comportment as a reliever, and wanting to stretch out Hughes. Plus, my understanding is that Vasquez had a bum shoulder in the second half of 2004, and that it was Levine and Co. who wanted him dealt, not Cashman.

With one more OF, the Yanks are set.

    Don’t forget David Robertson.
