You could do far worse than a soon to be 38 year old with a plethora of postseason success (18 wins) as your #3 starter.
A guy with 229 wins who has spent most of his career with your team.
Who knows the ups/downs and pressures of NYC.
Who has won five rings.
A guy who was the winning pitcher when the Yanks clinched the ALDS, ALCS and WS.
And the NY Post reports that bringing Andy Pettitte back is a top priority of the Yankees.
I still wonder “what if?”. After all, Andy’s 229 wins are just seven behind Whitey Ford on the all-time list, but 37 of those wins came in Houston. 192 as a Yankee. He won’t catch Whitey on the Yankees list. What if?
He still could get #200 as a Yankee in 2010.
…and what if Andy hadn’t have gone just 14-14 in 2008? For that is the only year of his career that Pettitte didn’t have a winning record.
The ERA would probably be in the 4.20 to 4.50 range (4.16 in 2009) and the wins 12-15 (14 in 2009) if Pettitte is the same old Pettitte. You don’t know when the decline comes. Obviously he isn’t what he was. But at #3 or #4 he probably is still ok.
…and as we saw in the postseason, still #1 when it comes to heart.
On LoHud, it’s reported that the Mets are checking on Godzilla? Hmm…those knees and that OF? Doesn’t seem like a good match to me.
Reports are that the Yankees payroll will be significantly cut. Of course it’ll still be higher than any other team…
