According to an anonymous e-mail tip sent to the Web site gawker.com, Derek Jeter is going to be named Sportsman of the Year by SI tomorrow.

Yes. 1956, Mantle’s T.C. Year, can be best explained by looking at SI’s record in Olympic years…usually they choose an Olympian.
The one that stands out to me is 1961. Maris had the rep of being surly and not media-friendly. Jerry Lucas was a great college (and very good pro) basketball player, but compared to what Maris did in 1961?
