September 3rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm · No Comments

YANKEES (85-48 +7.5 AL EAST, +6.5 AL; Magic #23 for Div.
Magic # 20 for a playoff spot, OPS+119, ERA+ 103)

You know the drill…BA/HR/RBI/SB/Total attempts/OPS+ and comments
*= team leader, **= league leader

Jeter SS .332*-17-61-23*/28*-129 (2713 and counting…8 from Gehrig’s Yankee record)
Damon LF .293-24-75-10/10-133
Teixeira 1B .281-32*-101**-2/2-138*
Rodriguez 3B .274-23-75-9/11-137 (2502 total, of course not all as a Yankee)
Matsui DH .264-23-73-0/1-124
Posada C .280-19-66-1/1-128
Cano 2B .320-22-74-4/10-126 (if he were alive and broadcasting, when would Rizzuto have slipped up and called Robbie “Canoli”?)
Swisher RF .250-23-72-0/0-124
Cabrera CF .274-11-50-9/11-97 (Ok, Melky is below the average OPS of 100, but the other numbers are ridiculous)

Pitching: RHP Chad Gaudin (1-0, 3.21).  ERA+ 139 (Yankee stats only).
Overall 5-10, 4.90, ERA+ 79

Gaudin is taking Mitre’s start because of the liner Mitre took off his pitching forearm his last time out. Mitre goes Sunday.

Pete Abraham has good stuff to pass on. First check out pictures of how the old Frieze is coming down. Hey, mine is still up ;-)

Good to see Brett Gardner back in action. He should be back with the Yanks Monday (Labor Day) and since that is a d/n DH, expect BG to play in one of those games.

Albaladejo is up.

Pete has this to say about Joba:

Joba talked about his start tomorrow but when I asked him whether he needed to start getting better results, he said he has been pitching well. Somebody needs to show him the stats. …

I’ll show them. Here, Joba, read my blog…and remember that I was on to you way before many people. I talked about how good you were doing back when you were in the Hawaiian Winter League.

But I also have to say when you need to do better, and here it is:

Last 14 days: 0-1. 11.57
Last 28 days: 0-2.   8.50

Joba, that sure as hell isn’t pitching well.

More from Abraham (good stuff today):

HOMER HAPPY: The Yankees have hit 208 homers, a pace that would give them 253 for the season. The franchise record is 242 by the 2004 team. The Major League record is 264 by the 1997 Seattle Mariners.

and check this out regarding 20/70 players for this year.

Want a good laugh? You have to check this out. It’s a takeoff and exaggeration of the pie to the face antics of the Yanks in animated form…and while I won’t give it away, I personally loved the characterization of Suzyn.

College football starts tonight. Guess I’ll have to adjust the TV. That purple field of Boise State strains the eyes. The alma mater, PSU has Akron on Saturday. 27 point favorites, PSU is. … and once again, Joe “Amos Alonzo” Paterno will lead the charges…
