Lineup:

YANKEES (80-48 +6, magic # 29; +6 on Pythagorean)

No details today. Busy. A few comments.

Jeter SS  2705 hits, 16 behind Gehrig.
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Swisher RF
Cano 2B
Hairston CF The Melkman gets a day off.
Molina C Hopefully Posada is back tomorrow.

Pitching: RHP Sergio Mitre (2-1, 6,82).

Mitre vs. Contreras. Between possible rain delays and this matchup, it could be a long day.

As noted, Jeter knocked Donnie Baseball off the Top-10 Yankee HR list. Here is the list:

Home Runs

Rank Player    HR    PA
1. Babe Ruth   659   9197
2. Mickey Mantle   536   9909
3. Lou Gehrig   493   9660
4. Joe DiMaggio   361   7671
5. Yogi Berra   358   8355
6. Bernie Williams   287   9053
7. Graig Nettles   250   6247
8. Jorge Posada   238   6228
9. Alex Rodriguez   230   3807
10. Derek Jeter   223   9666

Hairston (what a pickup…2nd best (after the Phils getting Lee) of the deadline?) doubled in two in the 2nd. Damon doubled in 2 more in the same inning.

If you missed it, ex-member of Bread, Larry Knechtel, an accomplished musician going back to the early ’60s with Spector and the Spector sound, passed on this week at age 69.

Back to the game…we are now in the 4th and the Yanks are pouring it on. RBI singles by Alex, Matsui and Swisher. Another run scores on a forceout by Cano. 8-0 after 4.

Meanwhile, WHAT IS THIS????? 12 up, 12 down so far for the Meat Tray?

13 in a row before Thome doubled. A 1-hit shutout for the Meat Tray after 5. He’s been fabulous today. Who’d have thought?

Jeter 3 for 3. 2708 and counting.

Rbi for Cano in the 6th. 9-0.

Mitre takes one off the meat hand in the 7th and is pulled. 6 1/3, 0 R, 1 hit, 1 walk and 2 Ks. Fabulous. Gaudin finishes the 7th.

A-Rod hits #576* (23) in the 8th.  10-0.

Gaudin finished the game with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.

Thome’s 5th inning double was the only hit for the Chisox.

Magic #28.

I am still genuinely shocked to have read this about Mitre. The family and I were out for our annual sojourn to a local corn maze–lots of fun–and I checked the Internet via the phone as I wandered through 10-foot high corn–no joke. I’ve never seen corn that tall before. Must be on PEDs. Anyway, I saw it was 4-0 in the 4th, and Meat Tray had not surrendered a hit yet. Then I saw 8-0 in the 6th, and just one hit.

If I didn’t just check the highlights on the Yankees’ website, I still don’t think I would have believed it. Amazing. Chicago is reeling, and the Yanks are rolling.

Finally, 33 games over .500. Get the sweep.
