YANKEES (62-40)
Jeter SS
Swisher RF
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Posada C
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Hinske LF RF
Pitching: RHP Sergio Mitre (1-0, 5.91).
Clayton Richard was supposed to start for the White Sox tonight, but he was in the Peavy deal. Righty D. J. Carrasco goes for the Pale Hose instead.
A day off for J.D. I take it that Hinske is in LF? I know it’s been a busy day with the trade deadline, but looking at Pete Abraham’s blog, he had Posada and Melky catching (ok, he missed the F in CF) but Swisher and Hinske both in LF. He also had no 2B in the lineup, omitting Cano. Rough day for the guy.
Note: Updated above.
I guess the ABP put out on Hinske’s whereabouts has worked. (Only because of the switcheroo in Chicago’s starter).
Pete does add:
WELCOME BACK: Shelley Duncan joins the club from Triple-A Scranton. He had a .911 OPS there in 90 games, hitting 25 home runs and driving in 75 runs. He also had 14 doubles. He has 57 games of major-league experience with the Yankees, hitting .221 with eight homers in 131 at-bats.
Ransom still here as Hairston hasn’t arrived yet. For Duncan’s arrival, Albaladejo was optioned.
Update: Apparently Duncan may be here for just one game. Girardi supposedly wants the versatility Ransom and Hairston both provide. What this means for Ramiro Pena, who knows.
Apparently the M’s wanted A-Jax for Washburn. NO WAY. I’ve heard Melky, Montero, Gardner (before the injury) and now A-Jax. No way to the deals (rumors) I’ve heard.
Nice start for the Yanks. Single, single, double (1 run), RBI Groundout, RBI single. With Mitre going, we don’t know what to expect. Three in the first.
Update II: I was right in my fears about Mitre. He was awful tonight. 5 R in 3 IP. Hinske tied the game with a HR, thus confirming the statements I and Jason made that he has to get back in the lineup soon. Less than 25 AB as a Yankee, and 5 HR.
Robertson went 2, giving up a run and getting the loss. The game really got away when the White Sox got four runs in the 7th…all with two out and all off Aceves.
I won’t dump on Aceves for the bad outing tonight. After all, it was his first outing in I think 10 days. But sometimes one bad outing leads to another. You didn’t want to have to use Aceves in a close game to break him back in after he missed some time due to a tired arm. You would like to break him in slowly. Girardi didn’t have that luxury however, since Hughes went yesterday.
Mitre had to give more innings. His failure to do so led to more failure by another pitcher (Aceves). Sometimes you get that snowball effect, where one pitcher’s failure leads to another pitcher’s failure. We saw that tonight. 3 games, ERA of 7.90 for Mitre. All we ask of him is to be halfway decent and better than what Wang gave. 7.90 isn’t that much better than Wang’s 9.64. Should Mitre fail…. ugh. Igawa? Josh Towers? Jason Johnson?
A pitcher can still be had, but now must pass through the waiver wire first.

I saw Abraham’s miscues too, Mike. Clearly, the guy is slipping. If I see him in Chicago, he’ll get an earful.
We got our wish with Hinske. I hope he cranks one. Speaking of which, I suspect a livelier ball for the day games this weekend in Chicago. Abraham said that Girardi hinted that Ransom and Hairston might both stick. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I like Hairston as a versatile acquisition, but think they need more pop off the bench. I like Hinske, but Molina, Hairston, Ransom don’t inspire a lot in me offensively. Personally, I’d love to see Shelley mash as he did in 2007, but that might be Waiting for Godot.

Had to get a pitcher from somewhere, but did nothing. This team is a possible world series team, but if it is true and Joba goes back to the bullpen. This team is one Burnett DL stint from having three quad A pitchers at the back end of the rotation. Not including the very average Andy Pettite. Cashman blew it big time And start the clock because A-Jax and Montero better be very good contributing players soon, or if this team crash and burns because of no pitching depth and those two were held back in trades for pitchers It will (and should) cost him his job.

The thing is, it’s a #5 you are looking for, but for a #5, teams wanted players you only give up for a #1 (maybe a #2). Montero or A-Jax for a Washburn or a Bannister? No way.
I don’t know what “soon” means as far as very good contributing players for Montero and A-Jax. Since A-Jax is 22 and Montero 19, is 2011 soon enough?
A problem isn’t so much whether A-Jax and/or Montero contribute, but WHERE if they do. For A-Jax, it’s easier. After all, Damon is 35, Matsui 35, Nady won’t be back. Matsui won’t be back. Damon? Questionable. It’s different for Montero, who is a C/Dh. There is the rub. Posada turns 38 this month and is signed for two more years. Is Montero defensively savvy enough to take over in 2011? As good defensively as Cervelli? (Montero’s bat, .335-17-69 combined is looking pretty good). But what is that DH spot going to look like? Is Montero going to share DH/C with Posada? 1B (which Montero isn’t playing) is locked up with Teixeira. Could Montero learn some RF? DH may be needed in the future for Jeter (35) or Alex (34 and with that hip…). It looks like they will need to make room for Montero’s bat (a righty hitter but good power to RF…and that jetstream). The question is where.

Speaking of doing nothing, what is Omar Minaya doing besides cashing paychecks?
We got our wish and Hinske did crank one, Jason. Too bad it went for naught.

sometime in the next years one of the two will have to do something. People look at a 200 million dollar payroll and we’re sending out Sergio Mitre. Montero is interesting because you have to acess if he can play catcher because if he can’t there doesn’t seem to be a spot for him, unless he’s a 27-28 call up. in 2011 you’ll have a right side of the infield with two almost 40 year old players. One will need to DH. You don’t want a softball team and you could have a big, slow lumbering RF in Montero. It’s amazing how 200 million dollars spent and pitching wise throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks.

I meant left side of the infield
