Game 102. Hughes’ streak ends as Yanks lose 3-2.

In a well-pitched one-run game, the little things can come back to haunt you. One bad inning didn’t doom the Yanks at the time, but came back to haunt them later. With the score even at one in the 7th, (Pettitte 6 1/3, 2 R, 1 ER) two errors (it should have been three but for a generous official scorer) enabled a run to score for the White Sox. Swisher tied the game in the 9th with a HR (getting a bit of revenge on his ex-manager Ozzie Guillen, whom Swisher doesn’t get along with) but Phil Hughes gave up a couple of hits in the 9th and DeWayne (I saved Buehrle’s perfecto) Wise singled in the game-winner off of Phil Coke.

It was the first run off of Hughes in 25 1/3 innings.

It was a pretty brutal game for Teix and Alex. Each were 0-4 with 3 Ks. Alex should have been charged with an E but it was the aforementioned overturned one.

Matsui was 0-4 with 2 Ks. Swisher, before the HR, was 0-3 with 3 Ks. 3-6 in the lineup last night? 1 for 16 with 11Ks. Tough to win that way.

The Yanks’ lead over Boston cut to 2 1/2.

Nothing on any Yankees deals yet. Some names that were rumored to have the Yanks’ interest have already been dealt: Sherrill, Grabow, Snell, even OF Josh Anderson… maybe today we hear of a Qualls or Mahay rumor. We’ll see if anything happens.

A quick look at the minors: AAA: SWB split a DH. In one game, John Rodriguez HR, 2 RBI and Kevin Russo (.317) 2 rbi. Rodriguez still dh-ing however. An 8-2 win. In the other, a 6-2 loss, Ivan Nova gave up six runs, five earned, in 7 IP. Russo had two hits in that game.

Just going to AA, no lower (busy) Trenton lost 8-4. De La Rosa 4 R in 4 IP.

Remembering… 30 years ago this coming Sunday:

Munson
Funny how 30 years later, the Yanks are in Chicago…
where Munson played his last game…
