Game 73. Alex passes Reggie, but it is the unexpected bats that come through as Yanks beat Mets 9-1.

Yes, Alex hit #564* to pass Reggie. But it is the unexpected hits that won this game.

Jeter was supposed to start, but apparently the (35th) birthday boy got the bug that hit Melky and  Matsui. A late scratch.

So what happens? His replacement, Ramiro Pena, gets 3 hits, two of which are doubles, including a big RBI. Right after Pena’s Rbi double, who singles him in but CC.

CC was great tonight. An RBI single, a sac, and most importantly, a 7 IP, 1 R performance. The only mistake was #508* by Sheff.

What a game for Brett Gardner. 5 for 6, a triple, a HR, a SB. He is now at .303. 17 SB. Where are his detractors now? It was (and still is?) too early to judge him. Don’t judge a guy at less than 100 ABs, will you?
