According to Tyler Kepner of the Times, Pettitte has turned down the Yanks offer. Now we see if anyone blinks.
I read where Matt Millen will join NBC for its pregame SB coverage. Gee, wonder what the ratings will be like in Detroit for that?
Twins owner Carl Pohlad died at 93.
Jason Giambi is close to a one-year deal with the A’s. He is tied with Joe Carter on the all-time list with 396 HR, four away from 400. Last year with the Yanks he hit .247-32-96, OPS+ 128. For his career, .286, OPS+ 146. He turns 38 on Thursday. He most likely would DH for Oakland. As Yankee fans know, his defense is way below par, and although his eye for walks and power are still there, he has hit over .253 just once since 2002.
Reading Peter Gammons column, it seems like an innocent mistake, if a mistake at all, but J. C. Romero of the Phils has been suspended for the first 50 games of 2009. Romero, 32, was 4-4, 2.75 (ERA+ 160) for the Phils in 2008 and pitched in 81 games. He’s 32-28, 4.14 (ERA+ 111) for his career and won two games in last year’s WS.
Ohio State made it close, but the Big 10’s poor bowl season continued as Texas’ last minute TD gave the Longhorns a 24-21 victory in the Fiesta Bowl. Iowa was the only big 10 team to win its bowl game.

Mike, Andy may wish he took the offer. Even though he would make a decent No. 5 starter at this point, I’m sure the Yankees can replace him with one of the younger guys like Hughes or Kennedy if necessary. Also, Carl Pavano signed a one-year deal with the Indians, so at least another team can now worry about a hangnail, blister or whether he sneezes hard enough to pull a rib (which I actually did in 1993); then again, I wasn’t an overpaid millionaire with a .500 career.

See my next post Joe. I might call Andy’s bluff if I were Cashman. Another lefty who might be a nice 1 year slot at #5….younger, cheaper and someone you as a Phils fan would know very well…
