New NFL memories to come? Rays get Burrell

January 5th, 2009 at 3:10 pm · 2 Comments

You never know what will happen, especially in a playoff game.

This weekend revives the Giants-Eagles rivalry, which has already seen this:
Bednarik/Gifford
and this
Miracle in the Meadowlands

Granted they were regular season and not playoff games, but memories nonetheless.

Of course in Tennessee, they remember this, The Music City Miracle over the Bills (sorry, Jason):

Music City Miracle

Something I didn’t realize until now: That to date is the Bills last playoff game.

Pittsburgh will always have:
The Immaculate Reception

over the Raiders

But I also remember this:
Chargers beat Steelers for AFC title

A great moment for the Chargers.

Panthers-Cardinals? No great memories there, especially between the teams. The Panthers did make, and barely lose, a Super Bowl, but the Cardinals haven’t had too many great moments since 1947, when
Harry S Truman

was president and

Bucky harris and 1947 Yankees

Bucky Harris managed the Yanks to the title.

Which makes this weekend great. What new memory may happen? We don’t know. It could be a great play or a great comeback that’ll live forever. Maybe a great upset. Who knows.

Meanwhile, one young man in the LV Yankee Fan Club has been fighting for his life for many years. At 13, he has a rare disease and has outlived just about everyone who has had this disease. This very ill young man has been an inspiration to many who know him. Over the holidays, it was arranged for this young man to have a couple of “pick-me-ups.” One was a phone call from Joba Chamberlain. The other? An e-mail from Yogi Berra.

MLBTR is reporting that the Rays have reached a two-year, $16M deal with Pat Burrell who, with Carl Crawford there, will ostensibly be used as Tampa’s DH. Burrell, 32, hit .250-33-86 for the World Champion Phils in 2008, OPS+ 125. For his career, he is a .257 hitter, OPS+ 119. 162 game average of .257-31-103, 97 walks, 158 strikeouts. With his below average range and lack of speed, he translates best into Tampa’s DH. He had 2 HRs in the 2008 NLDS and another in the NLCS vs. the Dodgers before a 1 for 14 WS. He did have odd splits for 2008. After July 31st, he only hit .191-7-22. 1st half .275-23-57; 2nd half .215-10-29.

Bednarik’s hit on Gifford was one of the all-time blasts. It reminds me of the Bills’ Mike Stratton putting the Chargers’ Keith Lincoln out of the 1964 AFL Championship Game with the “hit heard ’round the world.” What a mean ol’ cuss Bednarik was and is.

No sweat on the “Music City Miracle” pic, Mike. It was a forward pass. :-)

Good pickup by the Rays, landing Burrell. He has his limitations but he makes that lineup significantly deeper with a strong righty bat, and for a reasonable price.

That’s just great that the Fan Club arranged for some contacts from Joba and Yogi. My heart goes out to the kid. Children should never have to suffer so.

I’ve met Bednarik a couple of times (he lives in Eastern PA, between where I live and Philadelphia…approx. 20 miles from me) and let me tell you, he is as ornery as ever. You can tell the arthritis in the knees, and every finger seems to go in three different directions. But still one big, tough, mean SOB.
