Age catches up with Bernie.

Bernie Williams was attempting to play in the WBC for Puerto Rico and joined the Puerto Rican League in order to work himself back into shape. After being out of the majors for two years and being now 40, you can guess what happened. Pete Abraham has the story.

There are rumors (Olney) of the Dodgers talking to the Mets about Andruw Jones. The Mets would put Jones in RF. It says a lot about Manny Ramirez in that teams are avoiding him. Maybe it’s a universal disgust around baseball as to what Manny did last year. But the Mets are looking into Andruw instead of signing Manny. Jones was awful last year, and awful in 2007. 2008 was his only year in LA after spending the rest of his career with the Braves. Here is a look:

2006 .262-41-129 OPS+ 126 11th in MVP voting
2007 .222-26-94 OPS+ 88
2008 .158-3-14 OPS+ 34

He’s due to make $15M in 2009, AND get $2.1 of his signing bonus from LA. Ugh. Jayson Stark reports that the Dodgers were looking at Adam Dunn. Moving Jones and signing Dunn leaves Manny where?

Some falloff for Jones, eh? Apparently the Mets would want LA to pick up most of the salary, but it says a lot as to Manny’s options as well as to the fact teams would look at Jones over Manny.

Have you heard the supposed Matsui for Bedard deal
( Gammons is the source?) I don’t see why Seattle wouldn’t take him & Igawa, based on their Japanese fanbase out there. They’d cash in big time adding them to Ichiro, this isn’t just a delirious fan baseball card trade. I’d do it muy pronto.

Yes, I have. What worries me about it, even though Bedard is decent, is this. Only once has he started 30 games in a season, and he has never given 200 IP. The potential is there but you already have one “injury risk” in Burnett. He’s a lefty, would only be 30 and would be superb in the 4 or 5 spot, but having missed 1/2 of 2008 and having what I mentioned above, you wonder about the risk factor.

That trade is not gonna happen for what seattle gave up for him I highly doubt it. Don’t get me wrong if the Yanks could get Bedard for Mats I would do it without thinking but its not gonna happen.

Mike one of the reason why I dont thnik we will trade Mats is because if the Japanese fanbase we have. If they do trade him or let him go at the end of next year do you think the Yanks will go for Yu Darvish.

Wow. Darvish. Hmmm….first of all, Darvish would want to be posted, and the bids for him would be huge. Granted Damon, Matsui and Nady are FA’s after 2009 but who knows. I know one thing. After Irabu and Igawa, the next pitcher the Yanks get from the Japanese Leagues better be damned good and live up to the hype!
