Pete Abraham reports:
Meanwhile there’s a report out there that Andy Pettitte has a three-year, $36.5 million offer. If so, than good for him. But Pettitte said two things all season: He wanted a one-year deal and he wanted to stay with the Yankees.
The Yankees have offered him just that opportunity. After everything that happened, he should take it. Based on what I’ve heard from fans, his status will be damaged otherwise.
The Yankees and Brewers were planning to talk today to try and complete that trade for Mike Cameron. There were reports that Kei Igawa was involved but that may no longer be the case.
All right, besides the disappointment in maybe not being able to dump off Ugh-Gawa, I am not happy with the rumored three year offer for Andy if it was the Yanks who made the offer. I like Andy, would like him back (at the reduced rate of $10M) but would not give him three years. One year. Period. With CC and A.J. signed to long-term deals, you still have to have flexibility and room for a developing youngster, be it Hughes or Kennedy. Locking up a whole rotation into long-term deals is not the way to go. There has to be room for someone on the rise. Some incentive for Hughes, Kennedy and others. A goal to strive for.
Andy would turn 39 in the last year of this deal should this rumor be true. In 2011, Jeter would turn 37, Alex 36, Posada would be in the last year of his deal and turning 40. A three-year deal to Andy would NOT be in the Yankees’ best interests.
Josh asked me about Bill Hall. Hall’s name has come up in the Cameron deal as well. I don’t like what I see of Hall. I do see someone who has played four positions, (2B, SS, 3B and CF) but his numbers are below the league average at all four positions. His BA has gone .291-.270-.254-.225 over the past four years. Cameron is a high-strikeout guy. Why take two of them? Hall had 37 walks and 124 K’s this past year. OPS+ 79, just 89 in 2007.
I’ll stick to Wigginton.
